It would change the character of the state....are you kidding me? Maryland, especially Baltimore, and nearby DC, are pretty much the bottom of the barrel of society. How much worse could it get? What an absolute joke. Do these people saying these things actually live there? I have, and you couldn't pay me to go back!

They have said the same crap in Ohio every time they try to pass the slots etc. The Governor is a moron and believes the crap.

If you have ever been down in the projects in Columbus or Cleveland you can understand how hard he is working to protect the lottery. The streets are littered with scratch off lottery tickets.

Ironically, a study of the quality of life in 215 major world cities, released today, rated Washington DC as the most unsafe city in America. I guess slots in Maryland, so close to the nation's capital, would just make the area even more unsafe, eh ?

The patronizing tone of the anti-gambling crusaders make me sick. Too many of them assume that the great unwashed masses of wagerers are weak, self-deluded souls who need protection. Well, shucks, it is awfully nice of them to volunteer to look out for me, I mean, I'm touched that they have it in their hearts to save me from myself, but really, I'm managing all right, I think. Like most of the people I know who bet horses, I have a house and a car and a job and a spouse and a kid. We're all doing just fine, thanks.

Yeah, we all know a horror story or two about someone who's hit the skids because of a gambling problem. But I know a lot more people who've destroyed themselves with alcohol, and I don't see too much activity on the prohibition front these days.

Unfortunately, condescending moralistic crusaders have long been a part of the American fabric, and they're certainly not going to disappear any time soon. And as long as battles over slots and casinos rage in various states, we'll just have to put up with their slings and arrows. But don't worry - once they lose this war, they'll find some other windmill to tilt at, and they'll forget all about us...
