Just recently, I had a problem getting a connection to the internet using either WINDOWS EXPLORER or FIREFOX.

I tried a little troubleshooting. All the lights on the modem were operating properly. On a hunch I tried shutting off ZONE ALARM, and tried to get a connection to the internet. Voila! It worked. I tried deleting the version of ZONE ALARM that I had, and downloaded it again. Still the same problem. If ZONE ALARM was on, I couldn't get a connection with the internet. . So I connected the WINDOWS FIREWALL, and that solved the problem. Anyone got any clues as to why ZONE ALARM suddenly won't work properly anymore?

Does anyone use any other free firewall on their computer, that does a good job in your opinion?

Thanks,

T2W

Your answer RE: ZA is in here somewhere: http://forum.zonelabs.org/zonelabs
Looks like it's with one of the MS updates that the conflict happened.

AVG is a good free anti-V: http://free.avg.com/

Big Mack:

Thanks for the tips. I'll have to read up on them.

It's interesting that you mentioned about MS updates. Now that I think about it, I believe that's where the ZA problems began to happen lately...i.e. right after my computer added some MS updates....hmmm.

For once you would be better off with Vista.

If you reset the Zone Alarm security setting from High to Medium, problems go away. They say they are working on it and will have the problem fixed "real soon now."

I used it on this W2K desktop until it's memory requirements made it two slow (RAM not upgradeable) so I am forced to used PANDA as the least slow option.

When I got my new laptop, I tried installing ZA, but too many problems under Vista, so after trying several others, I settled on Kaspersky and no problems since.

My laptop is now safe from internet hazards, but its portability makes it a target for my offspring.

When the price on Centrino 8100 laptops come down, I'm going to get one and not tell anybody.:D

Robert99 and Dick S:

Thanks for the tips. I reset ZONE ALARM's firewall, internet security zone level from high to medium. For now, that solves the internet access problem with ZONE ALARM being enabled on my computer. I still may set the security level back to high, and eliminate that recent MS patch instead. I'll have to weigh my options.

Just wondering what option other PA members prefer with this ZONE ALARM - MS PATCH glitch.

I don't know anything about the latest versions of Zone Alarm but way back I inadvertantly deleted some ZA file and it screwed up my compuer so bad I had to buy a new one....despite all kinds of emails and phone calls to ZA, they just ignored me.
Don't like them.

I had similar experience following one of their automatic updates. It seems a very fragile construct - much like Windows.
Z could not help or even get it uninstalled.
Used Kaspersky AV and free Comodo Pro firewall/anti-malware ever since.
K upgrades can be temperamental but the support forum is superb. Comodo is just faultlessly superb.

When I bought my Dell 2 years ago it came with 2 years of PCcillin. I have not had one single problem with them.

I will also say I have heard many good things about AVG as far as a freebie goes. It gets good reviews.

Exactly the same for me, even if they claim Vista compliant.
So I now use Norton, runs like a charm.

This article pertains to the norton/ms problem. I have Norton 360 and MS xp pro and have never had any problems that I know of.

It may be a good idea to turn off MS automatic updates. Then download the updates 1-2 weeks after they are released under the assumption that any software conflicts have been resolved.
