Next meeting is scheduled for 10pm eastern in the War Room on Wednesday, July 9th, 2008.
I hope a lot of people show up this week. It's lonely in there.

posting an agenda might help to gin up interest, i.e. we're meeting to discuss X Y or Z.

Good point.
We need a website so that we can state our mission and provide information to members about some of the upcoming goals.
The website would also help to recruit members.
So the website and it's content is probably a big topic for the next meeting.
We had someone volunteering to get the website set up, but I haven't heard back from them for a couple of weeks. I hope everything is OK with them.
It's very difficult balancing work, family, racing and getting involved with a handicapping organization. But I think we're still making progress.

I may not be able to make it Wednesday. I have my 1st in a series of tests ending up with surgery starting Wednesday.

Attached is a very simple html index page (and css) with the original handicappers united avatar.
Feel free to use this as a template and modify it to suit the HANA website should you decide to use it.
To view the template, download the zip file and unzip it to your fav folder.
Open the index.html with your browser to view. Or view the jpeg to get and idea.

Here are the websites I've done. I'm certainly no web design guru, my skills are more of the amatuer/intermediate variety, but I'd be glad to help out if needed. Any of these layouts could easily be turned into a HANA website.

Mich, MN -- this all looks great. Much appreciated.
Hammer -- good luck!
We're in a bit of a quandry. We had someone volunteering to do the website, but we haven't heard back from him in a couple of weeks.
I'm hesitant to say let's move forward, because no one put me in charge. On the other hand, there's an old saying, "Power isn't given. It's taken." So maybe we should just do it?
We probably need to have a meeting about setting up an organizational structure with a board of directors and maybe a president so that these decisions can be made without pissing off someone who has already put a lot of time into this.
Someone mentioned earlier that we would get a lot more people to attend the meetings if we laid out the agenda for the week.
In my opinion, we need to create the organizational structure -- otherwise it will be a free for all. We could end up with 5 different websites with 5 different designs.
So maybe this week we should discuss the structure. And then the following week we can nominate people for the various positions. Then we can create a poll and vote online. I would hope that we get nominations for people with a wide array of values, ideologies, backgrounds, beliefs, needs, etc.
Thoughts?

I think for now the group just needs two or maybe three dedicated people to drive things a bit, and a broader host of minions who are willing to help out with doing the work.
I'd suggest Rook, you, and Jeff P as drivers for now. You've all three shown the interest and the commitment to wanting to get this thing done, which is in my mind the single most important thing, and have thought a lot about it, and are smart, capable guys to boot. There are lots of guys here that meet the second two criteria, its the first one that is going to be the deciding factor.
you guys have a bunch of minions willing to help get things done, if that core group can be formed, all you guys have to do is ask for help and people will help.
Otherwise, rather than ask for nominations, I'd ask for volunteers.

Don't forget yourself, Indulto, and Murph, and Beenacoach and probably a few others.
Plus, I get PMs from people who offer support in various ways.

I'd nominate him, you, and multiple other guys. It's more about who wants to step up and take the actual reigns. I was guessing GT was more interested in helping than leading the charge, but I could be wrong.
Personally I'll help with anything I can.

You guys should convene a Constituational Convention of sorts and come up with some initial rules, regs, and layout of the governing body of HANA. Something like this is definitely going to need good leadership and sound structure to work. Define the official positions the group will need like directors, co-directors, media relations, publicty, and/or marketing directors, secretary, treasurer/accountant, webmaster/technology director....appoint people to the spots, come up with succession rules for future replacements, come up with rules on votes, stuff like that.

I have a few copies of bylaws taken from other associations, it's mainly an issue of just changing a few words here and there to make it relevant.
The larger issue is that most associations are local, it's a given that the primary address is within the state that the association is registered, it is a requirement. If they are not solely local, then they have a permanent office.
If it is to be a simple association to begin with, it will have to be formed in the state that the President resides, and the treasury likewise should probably be in the same state. It just complicates things a bit, in that the President absolutely needs to be resolute and not get bored with this in 3 months time, because if your next president is in a different state you'll have to reorganize the association in that new state.
Or at least that is how it appears to me.
Whoever the first President is, needs to carry through until the organization is either disbanded, or is large enough to warrant incorporating.

I think right now it is more of a fan club than an official organization. In fact, right now we're nothing but a few people thinking about starting an organization. This sure gets complicated.
No wonder it's hard to get anything done anymore. There are so many hoops to jump through that by the time your done jumping through them there isn't any energy left for working towards a goal.

the work involved in setting it up is miniscule...the main thing lacking is someone who wants to be at the helm.
Do you want to be President John?

Do you want to be President John?Chick,
Was that a fair question that should be answered prior to confirming our mission which is STILL UNDEFINED?
In any event, official positions prevent participation by phantoms with psuedonyms and privacy concerns. I prefer the roles promoter, prodder, and provocateur, myself, and can only hope the eventual "President," "Chairman," or whatever (and his staff) will continue to put up with me.
It was very gratifying to receive some measure of support from the two of you. Not all members here are willing to communicate substantively with someone they don’t know personally. I mention this because I recently became aware that this is an issue which could create an unfortunate divide between people who might otherwise be united by a common objective. I accept that, for some, it’s a matter of principle, but IMO there should be as few barriers as possible to the submission and exchange of ideas and opinions in cyberspace.
