He received applause around the track for that one

I laughed when I heard that. Two things, he is a master. He sings, then at the wire states perfectly what happened. And two, he has quite a voice. I think he hit the right notes!

Probably rehearsed that at home shocking the neighbours:)
A super caller. Have a listen to Curlins 'perfect' win. Great stuff.

That was quite a call with Cigar, I know which one you mean.

Saw a photo of Cigar stretching like a cat, his front legs, he's so cute.

And they called Pavoratti the king of the high Cs. Durkin hit the last note tone center at around the sixteenth poll. I could guess his intent was to hold the note until the winner hit the finish line but he seemed to run out of breath. Still, a memorable moment from one of the best personalities in the game. A career at Lincoln Center awaits if he should get bored with his day job.

Listen to when they hit the 1/8th pole. Durkin is getting excited as he knows he'll be able to pull this one off in a few seconds...classic

I'll tell you what, that call took some serious cojones. The fact that he actually hit the notes was mighty impressive.

Storm Cadet, I used your link, but didn't find the race call you are referring to...would love to see it.
In scrolling down your page I came across the photo for the Race Track Chapliancy painting...the hands of God around the horses/jocks as they come out of the turn... that is a gorgeous:ThmbUp: painting. I love it.

That one IS a classic, hilarious:lol: ...just one more reason to love Durkin...he's everything a great caller should be.

Some of his calls like Cigar's perfect win, and Tiznow winning for America, still give me goosebumps.
He's a champion at what he does.

He slips in some great comments during a race.

I remember at Saratoga once when a horse named Shoop was running.

"Shoop, that's where it is, goes for the lead."

here's a You Tube link http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Tom+Durkin&search_type=

and the nicest guy in the world to boot. I wrote a review for the Bloodhorse that complimented him and he wrote back with a very nice note.

just a classy, classy guy.

One of my favorite Tom Durkin race calls occurred say about 10 to 15 years ago. It happened shortly after the release of the movie Silence of the Lambs staring actor Anthony Hopkins. There was a horse who had been given the name Hannibal Lectur, believe it or not. Might have been trained by The Chief but I'm not sure on that one. Anyway, Hannibal Lectur was involved in an event at the Big Sandy during which he made an absolutely daunting and decisive move from off the pace, summarily picking off his foes one by one, opening up an opportunity for Tom to call one of my favotite race calls and what has to be one of Tom's greatest hits: It was something like " And here comes a late move by Hannibal Lectur down the middle of the track, and Hannibal Lectur is absolutely eating them up alive, and it's going to be Hannibal Lectur". Or something like that. That was a fun call, I'd kill to hear it again.

Even though Arcangues broke my heart when he won The Breeders Cup Classic (and cost me 7 out of 7 in the pick 7 in the process::mad: , Durkin's call was great:

He said something along the lines of "Here's Arcangues, an impossible winner parimutuelly speaking"!
