Perhaps they were racing without a starting gate, and it took them that long to get all the horses settled and lined up for a fair start.

Didn't the movie show him barely getting up, or am I thinking of another movie?

He paid $6.60 to place and $5 to win?

"Kemspon took six hairs from Phar Lap’s mane and analyzed them at the Advanced Photon Source Synchrotron in Chicago, finding that in the 40 hours before Phar Lap’s death the horse had ingested a massive dose of arsenic."

Hair today, gone tomorrow.
Same as Custer's command "Take No Prisoners!"
Hair today, gone tomorrow. Scalped.

If Kempson's findings are true, that's no surprise.
If Custer's order held, that would be. A surprise that is.
It's amazing what science says, or supposedly says.

Starting gates did not front gates as horses were just backed in and often did not settle for long periods of time. The "gate" of that day was glorified stalls.
