Here is a suggested revised version of Jeffp's proposed mission statment. Let me know what you think.

Our Mission Statement:
H.A.N.A. is committed to giving horseplayers a united voice. By banding together we can bring
about change. We can provide the horseracing industry with something it has never had: the
opportunity to hear a clear and unmistakable message from its customer base. By making the
industry aware of customer needs and wants, we can motivate track management and horseman's
groups to change course and start doing the things needed to bring the game of horseracing back
to the health, prominence, and greatness it so richly deserves.

Since you posted this publicly, I’ll assume you want input from others besides SJ.

Why are you qualifying the duration of free membership? IMO for widest possible participation, e-mail addresses should be the only piece of information initially requested. To my knowledge there’s little cost associated with mass e-mail contacts for informational purposes or to gather support.

Additional personal data is always an option for those wishing to actively participate, but there’s no reason to inhibit anyone from seeking further information. I would also include the ability to enter suggestions and to specify issues they'd like to see addressed, potentially giving them a stake in future proceedings.

FWIW I suggest replacing the underlined portions with “cooperate with us and do” and “once enjoyed and still can,” respectively.

I have to admit that was supposed to be a pm but I screwed up and posted it here instead.

However, I am glad I did as I like both of your suggestions on the mission statement and we will consider them for sure.

As for the limited time only.....there have been a TON of suggestions of things that HANA should do that are solid ideas, but cost money. So I felt it was a good idea to let people know that at some point membership would cost something. A second reason for that is that if people know that joining is only free for a limited time they may well be less likely to put off doing so. Resulting in larger numbers of people joining in a shorter period of time...or at least I hope it will.

I see that the Pro Poker Alliance has two levels of membership. One is free and the other is $20 and has some additional benefits. Once we get up and operating I hope we can go to that kind of a system as well...but of course there has to be some benefits created first.

The former is certainly valid as a marketing tool to attract income, but IMO is more likely to discourage hype-sensitive readers, than encourage genuinely interested ones.

The latter is far more important. While limiting input will hopefully allow decision-makers to take more immediate action, fuller participation will result from encouraging outside opinions; especially fresh ones. I thought Chick, GT, Stu, and Raz brought a lot of new energy to last night's discussion that should be "harnessed." ;)

It might also be worthwhile to compile statistics on issues identified and post their priority based on feedback to date. With 20-20 hindsight, it might have been more productive to initially poll issue priority rather than organization name.

Perhaps your website will poll prospective members on the top x issues determined from an initial poll here on PA and updated with each new e-mail acquisition. If I get any encouragement with initial category proposals, I may have to figure out how to set one up myself. :faint:

Here's my top 10:
1) lower takeout, 2) freedom of ADW choice, 3) lower exotic wager minimums, 4) eliminate limits to venue access for betting and viewing, 5) preference for paddock inspection to talking heads, 6) non-standard rules of racing for medication, DQs, fines, etc., 7) public access to vet information re: treatment, procedures, and equipment, 8) raceday medication and non-therapudic steroid use, 9) oversight of breeding for soundness, 10) free PPs for all cards receiving some minimum wager total.

I don't see racing surface on your list. I think the synthetics issue is an important one for horseplayers.

When is the next HANA meeting and how does one get an invite?

The name HANA reminds me of the Robin Trower song [Hannah]. Great song.
