I figured I would start something different from the normal handicapping discussion to mix things up a bit. If you guys had to choose between a $5 win place or show ticket on a horse that is 50:1 or higher or one pull of a slot machine assuming the max pull costs $5 what would you choose? Lets assume it's a 10 horse field. I would probably choose to bet the $5 to win or maybe place on the 50:1 only because I would think he would have a better chance of coming in the money then me hitting on the slot machine.

The odds are much better than with the slots.A long while a go reading book gambleing slots and such the guy was saying what great odds with slot only eight thousand to one. That when i put book down as horse player made no sense to me.

take the ticket, get a refund before post time, and bet on something with a decent shot...

Anyone have any stats in there databases on how many horses over 50-1 have won in the last year and what percentage it is?

I would have to say the actual odds of a horse who wins who is much greater then 50-1 is actually greater then 50-1.

If your slot machine pays out at 93% like most do, you better be pulling the lever. Hell of a lot better than a 0.65ROI 50-1 shot.

But since I can't stand looking at those freaky pieces of fruit or whatever, I'd take the horse bet. It would keep me sane.

Do I like the horse at all, or is it a random 50/1 shot?

A common misconception on those returns for slots. The only way you actually get those is if you hit the big jackpot and that isn't likely to happen any time soon. Till you hit that jackpot, your return is much less than that 93%. What makes it nice is that you get a lot of little winners which makes you feel like you are accomplishing something while your bankroll steadily shrinks.

On the horses the takeout is the same for each race, so you don't need to hit the pick six to have the ROI listed(-15% whatever). Of course you still need to hit your share of winners.

There are people who play slots for the simplicity, & then there are those that bet on horses for the increased mental challange. But horses that are 50:1 are that price for a reason, & Santa, the Easter Bunny & the Tooth Fairy don't exist.

But what for is in essence a one time $5 donation, between a $5 pull or the 50:1 shot, I'd take the pull as it has a better chance of getting some kind of return.

Do I get to see the PPs for the race before I decide?

A no-brainer if I get to choose the 50-1 shot that I think has a chance.

A couple of weeks ago I caught a 50/1 in the second slot of a super. 50/1's don't come in often, but sometimes they do.

I voted for the 50/1 (assuming I'm selecting the 50/1).

I thought that this was a handicapping forum not a gambling forum.

I think if we all thought that the 50-1 had a legitimate shot we would always play the 50-1 over pulling a lever.

Well, we ARE sorting it out.

Between May 2007 and April of 2008, there were (ROI of 1.00 being break-even):

Horses: 26326

Winners: 184 (0.7%) ROI 0.47 (high: $269.60)
Place: 569 (2.2%) ROI 0.43 (high: $101.60)
Show: 1381 (5.3%) ROI 0.40 (High $ 87.20)

In other words, betting them all lost over 50 cents on each dollar bet.

Based on that, the lottery would be slightly better, ROI-wise, and an honest slot machine would return much more, over the long run.

Thanks much!
Those results are pretty shocking.

First of all,the last time I dropped even a single coin into a slot was when I was still with my Ex,and that was just to keep her company. In countless trips to Nevada since,no coins into those pieces of junk. That being said,on this topic would go with the slot machine. The return on high denomination machines is usually between 95-99%.Would choose an older non progressive style like a Double Diamond. These machines return many smaller payouts rather than just one huge one.Your chance of getting a small payoff of say 2 to 10 coins would seem to be better than our 50-1 bomb finishing in the money.
