I noticed that there are about 30 tracks running on Saturday. This is just from the Twinspires menu. I cut out the Harness Tracks.

Too many? I think so........................anybody care to take a guess how many horses are needed to run these cards?

If they didn't have slots, how many of them would be shut, is a better question.

While I cannot argue that it is probably more than most people would want or need, from a selfish standpoint, the sheer volume and access to simulcasting as it has evolved, has allowed me to move from the red to the black, and from cubicle to self employment. Short fields can be a problem, but not as much as large fields for me.

well and being honest, I am not sure youve got them all....Just at a quick glance I think I know of at least one you didnt mention...Evangeline..
but, to your original question...I can see where alot of people might think it is a bit much due to breeding issues now is T-Bred racing. But, as for regionality, I think you need alot. As Much as I love the sport of handicapping and the ability to never leave the house and still get to wager, I also like having the ability to actually go out to the Fair Grounds for a day or two a week and actually watching the ponies, talking to some jocks and trainers. You might be surprised at some of the info you might be able to obtain there. If you limit them to just the major tracks, you isolate alot of the handicappers tools there by isolating the handicapper in certain aspects.

Perhaps you could explain to us what your implied beef is with having all of these tracks running.
Are you saying that if less were in operation we'd see fuller fields in the remaining ones? Would we see better purses and payouts?

I really can't understand why you see all these tracks as being a problem.
They provide entertainment and employment, so what's the beef?

The industry still follows survival of the fittest, like any other business.

It doesn't bother me one iota that Finger Lakes or Yavapai or whatever is running. Those aren't tracks that I play. But obviously people somewhere do and they enjoy them. So tell us what your beef is.

2 issues:
1) amount of income generasted by each track from all sources, and
2) # of horses needed to fill the races.
1) If the track makes money for non-horsemen, keep it.
2) If the track makes money for the horsemen, keep it.

Survival of the fittest doesn't seem to describe some of the racinos.

20-30% of the tracks need to go away.
They will eventually anyway.
You could run a couple more races a day at the remaining tracks and be ok.

Cost to put on the show needs to come down.

30 tracks 8 horse fields average............240x8 races

I might be high on average field size.........but you can do the math.

I am looking at 5 tracks today and it looks like tons of chalk to me...........

I am going to find something else to do.................

That would indeed math out for one day.

I was thinking along the lines of...

30 tracks @ 7.5 horses/race = 225 x 9 races = 2025 horses per day

2025 horses x 4 days/week = 8100 nags per week

Racing back every 3 weeks---8100 x 3 = 24,300

That's a lot of horses, but not nearly enough for all the tracks.

I don't have a problem with the amount of tracks or races. I'm only going to play about 10 races a day anyway. What I do have a problem with is, many lame or sick horses running in the races. I have been watching a lot of races lately, and I've seen too many (at all odds) horses stop racing between the 1st 1/8 and 1/4 mile. They don't stop running but you could see that the jockeys & horses are not trying to compete.
