Both trainer Jimmy Croll and sports announcer Jim McKay passed away today.
Very sad news, two more racing greats gone.
RIP

Jim McKay would have been thrilled about today...and I hope he's up there watching the Belmont.
Would it not be a fitting tribute to McKay if on the day od his passing, a Triple Crown is won. He'd a loved it!!

TV commercial over....

Extremely sad.

But maybe it's kinda good that there wasn't a TC this year. It'd be even sadder if there was one and Jim McKay died just before it. :( I remember when everyone was hoping Sunday Silence would win the TC. I remember McKay talking about it afterwards and saying "...will have to wait for another day..." "...It will be at least 12 years..."

It's sad to lose the great ones like that, especially when there are none of equal stature to take their place. TV racing commentary lost a lot of it's dignity when Jim McKay stopped broadcasting. I have missed his dedicated, informative, no-cute-stuff style since he's been off the air. He respected the sport.

Jimmy Croll gave us Holy Bull, Bet Twice, Forward Gal, Mr. Prospector, Parka, and on and on. We will probably not see his like again.
