Interesting what Dutrow has to say about Prado given my musings before the Preakness about why a jockey might NOT want to aggressively race-ride BB in the Preakness:

“It looked like (Prado) was just trying to keep our horse in a box, and not out to get the best finish out of his horse,” said Dutrow, who remarked he received a phone call from Riley Tucker’s owner, Ahmed Zayat, who told him he was upset by Prado’s ride. “It looked like he just did something to keep our horse in behind his horse, and he had to go out of his way to do it.”

Prado rides for Dutrow a lot....I betcha he ain't riding a lot for Dutrow in the future...Prado should have paid attention to what I wrote last week....

As for the future:

Dutrow addressed questions about a potential match-up with last year’s Horse of the Year Curlin, and said he would be eager for such a meeting to take place in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I) at Santa Anita Park Oct. 25. IEAH Stables and Paul Pompa Jr., Big Brown’s owners, sold the breeding rights to the colt to Three Chimneys Farm the day of the Preakness. Michael Iavarone of IEAH Stables said Big Brown would not race as a 4-year-old.

“Our plan is the Belmont, Travers, and Breeders’ Cup,” Dutrow said. “We are going to show up if our horse is good and ready. I don’t know what they (Curlin’s connections) are going to do. I would like to see them run together, it would be good for racing and good for us; it won’t be so good for them.”I know most won't put much stock in these words, but I feel compelled to bring it up for discussion given the almost unanimous prognostication that BB is finished racing after the Belmont....

Given these comments, if I was deciding who should get the mount on casino Drive...it would definitely be Prado!!! On the other hand, this could just be an attempt by Dutrow to try to preempt these kind of race riding tactics in the Belmont...either way don't think it matters much since Big Brown wins...although, gives me a new found respect for Prado...think about it...smart ride to try to box in the best horse...really was the only chance anybody had and Prado knew it and he tried to do what was necessary while staying within the rules of the game...gotta respect that...certainly the kind of guy you want riding for you regardless of what the owner says...

I was watching the race thinking the same thing. But if you knew Rick he'd be saying that he expects that sort of thing and actually encourages it.
He's VERY VERY close with Edgar and his family.

There was a race sometime during the last 2 weeks of the Aqueduct meet where Rick had a big favorite in and Rudy Rodriquez was on a 50-1 shot.
For those who don't know, Rudy works for Rick FULL TIME and when I had horses with Rick, whenever I would give him a new horse, Rudy would get on him and Rick would depend on Rudy to tell him how the horse moves and hits the ground.
He's a major part of Dutrow's operation.
In the Aqu race, Rick had a speed horse and Rudy, riding for another trainer had never shown speed. Well Rudy goes HARD HARD HARD for the lead and hung Dutrow's horse out on the turn and continued to break balls down the backstretch in what appeared to be a mission to get Rick's horse beat.
Well, Rick's horse STILL won at 2-5, but after the race several people mentioned to me that they couldn't believe Rudy would do that to his boss.
But Rick's personality is "Try to beat me because I'm trying hard to beat you"
(I left out the "Babe" part)

Prado's not the first guy to try to inhibit a favorite, especially a heavy one, if given a chance. I thought that was pretty standard business.

I won't take much stock in those words. Those were the plans for Smarty Jones after the Belmont....

Not quite following you here FM.
Unless you had an entry in the race,
why would you want to sacrifice your horse so others could win?

It's not personal, it's just business.

`Cmon Mr. Dutrow. Stop watching the Zapruder Film trying to find the 2nd gunman on the grassy knoll. Class is the ability to overcome adversity. Are you saying Big Brown is suspect in that area?

If BB is clearly the best & you feel that you can be competitive with the rest then doesn't it make sense to try to box BB in for as long as you can until it is time to move? The part about "not out to get the best finish out of his horse" is Dutrow's take on what was going on not mine...

Hope that helps.

For what it's worth, when I saw this live I thought Prado was responding to the fact that he was bumped by Kent & BB in the turn. As BB is in the one path passing Prado on Riley Tucker, BB leaves the one path for the two path and bumps him causing Prado to be seated momentarily. Prado then hustles Riley up on the backstretch for the "boxing" move.
