I like
Colonel John and
Big Brown
but not at the low odds they are likely to go off at.
If Gayego stays around 15/1, I'd bet on him.

One of my long-time users, who is deadly in the derby, sent me HIS picks:

17- Cowboy Cal
20- Big Brown
14- Monba
8- Visionaire

The intersection of the two lists would give us

Big Brown ont top of the rest in an exacta. (And reverse.)

20 x (19, 12, 9, 17, 14, 8) = $24

It is a fascinating race. By my analysis, Big Brown, Tale of Ekati, and Smooth Air are the quality horses that should be in the running at the 6F mark. Big Brown appears to be the best of these but it could come down to how hard each are used to get to that point. My late figure analysis sees Recapturetheglory, Colonel John, and Pyro as the best shots to really be moving at the 1 mile mark. Pyro has the best late kick, IF he runs back to his best effort. To me, that is a big if given his very poor last race (which I am not going to completely dismiss as a surface problem) Denis of Cork, Bob Black Jack and Monba are the next tier that would need to run career races to hit the exacta or trifecta.

I look at Ky Derby, Breeder's Cup, etc. as a rare opportunity to make a score on a single race given all the uniformed money in the pool. So therefore I usually spread out my wagers for a score.

Of course it depends on the odds, but I will be betting Smooth Air and Recapturetheglory to win.

Regarding exotics, I think Big Brown is the most likely winner and I will key him on top in the trifecta with some of the horses mentioned above for second and all of the horses mentioned for third.

As the second most likely winners, I will key Colonel John and Pyro on top in exactas, with most of the horses mentioned above (not Big Brown)

Best of luck to all and safe trips to the horses and jocks.

Jim

Interesting Dave. Check my mini stats on Beyers
http://www.paceadvantage.com/forum/showthread.php?t=46568

Basically (based on the last 5 Derby's) horses with at least 2 Beyers at or above 100 win more than their fair share. This year three qualify, Pyro,Gayego, and Big Brown!
