Employment Report a Relief
Last Update: 02-May-08 08:45 ET
The April employment report showed a 20K decline in nonfarm payrolls. That compared to a 81K revised decline from the prior month and the consensus estimate that called for a drop of 75K. The unemployment rate was reported at 5.0%, down from 5.1% in MarchGranted, nonfarm payrolls have declined four straight months for a cumulative loss of 260K positions. In 2001, though, nonfarm payrolls declined 281K in the month of April alone. The job market is loosening, but not in a recession-like way. This is a good report for the market where the initial response has been understandably bullish.
