Although the trainers seem to despise having their relativelly inexperienced horses pinned down on the rail, from your stats it seems that it's all about nothing with the 1,2 posts doing pretty well.

I don't have the PP's for the late 1800's. The missing years are the early years.

A lot of the 1 and 2 slot wins were gotten with smaller fields before they had 20 horses running each year.

May well have not had posts in the early days but walk up starts like they still do in the jumps. Don't remember my history well enough to know when the starting gate made its first appearance....of course there is google....and google says the starting barrier was first employed in Austrailia in 1894, so clearly the Derby being much older ran without it in the early days.

Re-check it for the last 20 years and get back to me.

Did they even use a gate in the 1800's ? Not sure ...

For the KD,I usually choose an inside and outside horse to win.As Jay Cronley,of Let It Ride-fame wrote,as one reason why picking the Kentucky Derby winner is so difficult."Doomsday post positions. Its as though the inside horses are under an avalanche;outside entries need OnStar."

Longer shots I personally like are #9-P and #2-TOE-but I'll go with the two morning line favorites-CJ and BB-so based on those odds, this year,I'll make my conservative bet on both horses to place.$55.00 on #20 and $45.00 on #10.These amounts, will of course, change with the final odds. Also these 2 over/the same 2/over 8 others as my primary tri bet, along with a secondary and tertiary wager.Might as well give the super a shot....Good Luck to All!

Who will finish in the money after the 134th running....? Run for the Roses by Dan Fogelberg...."And its Run for the Roses-As fast as you can-Your fate is delivered-Your moments at hand-Its the chance of a lifetime-In a lifetime of chance...." "Its breeding and its training-And its something unknown-That drives you and carries You home...."

Winning Colors won from post 1 in 1988, but she was the last horse from posts 1 or 2 to win (see other thread on this topic). In other words, the post doesn't mean that much if you have the horse, because horses have won from all over the place.

On second thought,I'll go with #13-BBJ along with #20-BB for the Win. Why? Front running types of Race Horses on Sloppy Track. Might not be Final Choices.
