Skype is great for audio. In my opinion, there are better options for video though. Personally, my whole family and I use skype, as you can talk one skype user to another skype user for free. Helps the cell phone minutes!

MagicJack works well for $49.95 first year and then $19.95 per year. You need a cable or broad band connection. Free local and long distance calling over the internet. Plugs into USB port and phone plugs into the Magicjack.
Works in USA and Canada.
