With Micro$haft Vista service pack 1 out for nearly two weeks, and
Micro$haft XP service pack 3 imminent...
There are a number of important third party updates to consider.

Some are important other are absolutely essential updates no matter what version of windows you run...

Java (https://cds.sun.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/WFS/CDS-CDS_Developer-Site/en_US/-/USD/ViewProductDetail-Start?ProductRef=jre-6u6-oth-JPR@CDS-CDS_Developer) RunTime 1.6.0.6 – essential

Adobe's flash browser plugin 9.0.124.0 – essential
Adobe's shockwave browser plugin – 11.0.0.0 – essential
http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/alternates/

VLC (http://www.videolan.org/) .0.8.6f – important
VLC's full featured and FREE big brother: MPlayer (http://mulder.dummwiedeutsch.de/home/?page=projects#mplayer) v.2008-04-14

Google Earth 4.3.7191 – necessary update

German FREE AntiVir (http://www.free-av.com/en/download/1/avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html) Personal 8.1.00.295 – important
AVG (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/downloads-products/us/frt/0?prd=aff) FREE Edition 7.5.524 – strongly suggested
Avast (http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html) FREE home edition – 4.8.1169 – recommended

FREE full featured software firewalls tested and recommended by your truly. Better than ZoneAlarm!
Comodo (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/download_firewall.html) Firewall 3.0.21.329
Online Armor (http://www.tallemu.com/downloads.html) 2.1.0.130 {Towards bottom of page, green icon.}

Many more, too many to mention so check all your software!
Notably, audio and video codecs.

Paid versions:
NOD32 AntiVirus 3.0.650 - important
Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7.0.1.325 – important although personally I'd say essential.

Please keep in mind for best performance old versions should be properly deleted before installing newer updates. Also, some apps require special uninstaller routines only found on company websites. Prime example: Norton and Adobe's flash must be uninstalled using company tools NOT windows uninstall.

Jeff Platt's Jcapper 2008 (http://www.jcapper.com/MessageBoard/TopicReader.asp?topic=26&forum=General)

Patiently continue with great anticipation of our very own PA software package upgrade. Update overdue by about 5 years. Silence may be looked upon as BM's killer app in hiding.

Hey y'all....while we are on topic, perhaps maybe one or some of you may be able to help me with a minor predicament..

I run Win/XP sp2 with IE 7.....and lately, when I go to websites requiring Adobe Flash Player or Shockwave Player...I am always directed to download the flash players......I have both of the most up to date players installed......So, what I am missing......Also in Outlook Express, I always have that menu banner warning about not loading pictures, when directed to a website, announcing that my computer is at risk of being Identified.....

I have been into my IE accounts and I believe, that I have all the appropriate boxes checked or unchecked, such as Java scripts, active =X controls, etc.....

Maybe someone can shed some further light, on my settings. pertaining to these issues.....

Thanks ahead,

Gibbon

IE > tools > internet options > security > custom level
enable “run activeX control and plugin”
enable “script activeX marked safe for scripting”
I would disable all other activeX controls.

IE > tools > internet options > advanced
scroll down to security section
enable “allow active content to run in files on my computer”

Otherwise, have you installed any new security updates such as the monstrosity known as McAfee, Norton or similar activeX anti-malware agent?

Robert,

The best portions of Secunia are paid versions. This is after all a gambling board. Despite the fact that most everyone claims to be a winner, we do, I suspect, have a number of compulsive personalities.

Therefore my emphasis on FREE software.

Thanks so much Mr. Gibbon, for your timely response.....I will give it a go...

And no, I definitely do not use Norton, Mcaffee,,But, as for further Active X-Malware agents, I'm not so sure.....

If this doesn't do the trick, perhaps, you will let me bother you once again........

Best,

The personal edition is free and is fine for home users - the most vulnerable. Have a try.

Kudos, Gibbon!

I just purchased a new HP laptop last weekend -- yes, Vistas preinstalled. I'll be working my way down this list later tonight.

I forgot...
One piece of software we all use regularly is Adobe's acrobat reader. PDF reader.
17mb of crapware.

May I suggest Foxit PDF reader. Less than 5mb and supremely fast even while viewing PDFs in browser. Bloatware & spyware free; no phone home every time app starts. http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

"None of us wants to admit that we hate someone...When we deny our hate we detour around the crisis of forgiveness. We suppress our spite, make adjustments, and make believe we are too good to be hateful. But the truth is that we do not dare to risk admitting the hate we feel because we do not dare to risk forgiving the person we hate."

"Forgiveness is God's invention for coming to terms with a world in which, despite their best intentions, people are unfair to each other and hurt each other deeply. He began by forgiving us. And he invites us all to forgive each other."

More to the query: I'm certain Hugh Hefner has a large compilation of photos.
But I doubt it's for FREE. Free software is the future business model of our INTERNET age.
Bill Gates commenting on Windozzz 7 codename “Vienna” is considering FREE windozzz with fees coming from a subscription model.

Sort of like the much toted HTR business model and Google.

Or tout.

Tote reminds me of the rubberized slip-ons that once protected my loafers from the plowed streets of Chicago going to pitch some exec on a creative approach for some inane product like Toaster Strudel. (insert jingle)
Whenever I left the confines of the studio I would exclaim "time to put on the ol' Totaroo's"
