There seems to be a difference in how to do speed pts in route races pertaining to sprints. Some say 1 pt for any sprint where 123 or 1 pt for any sprint within 6 lengths at the first call. Others say1 pt for 123 AND 1 pt for within 6 lengths.

This one pt difference could be significent in some races.

What do you guys think is best?

Quirin's original definition and findings pertained to giving a horse entered in a route today one point for running first, second, or third at the first call in a previous sprint AND also awarding the horse an additional point for that previous sprint if it was leading or running within six lengths of the leader at the first call. (Giving a horse two points for such a race (instead of just one) would be the only way that a horse running in a route today could earn the maximum possible eight speed points if its ratable races were all sprints.) However, if the horse entered in a route today was neither running first, second, or third, nor within six lengths of the leader, at the first call of the previous sprint, the race did not count toward the horse's total of three ratable races, and it got a bye for it. So a previous sprint race could help a horse in terms of speed points if it was running in a route today, but it could not hurt it.
