Trujillo out with broken neck

Jockey Elvis Trujillo suffered a fractured right wrist and fractures of the C5 and C6 vertebrae in his neck in a frightening spill here Saturday. Trujillo was thrown hard to the turf when his mount, Dinner Guest, broke down suddenly while challenging for the lead near midstretch of the 1 1/8-mile race.

"The good news is it could have been a lot worse, and he won't need surgery on either his wrist or his neck," said Trujillo's agent, Cliff Collier. "He'll have to wear a neck brace for about six weeks, and if all goes well, hopefully he'll be back riding again in about three months.

Trujillo, tied for fourth in the jockey standings this winter with 30 victories at the time of his mishap, gained national notoriety in 2007 after winning the Grade 1 Ballerina and the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint for trainer Doug O'Neill aboard eventual champion Maryfield.
