View Full Version : Why Was Spitzer Assasinated?

Eliot Spitzer wrote an editoral that appeared in the Washing Post 2/14/2008. I snipped the following from that editoral which can be read in full at washingtonpost.com.

Wonder why the MSM failed to report this?

[Quote]
Several years ago, state attorneys general and others involved in consumer protection began to notice a marked increase in a range of predatory lending practices by mortgage lenders. Some were misrepresenting the terms of loans, making loans without regard to consumers' ability to repay, making loans with deceptive "teaser" rates that later ballooned astronomically, packing loans with undisclosed charges and fees, or even paying illegal kickbacks. These and other practices, we noticed, were having a devastating effect on home buyers. In addition, the widespread nature of these practices, if left unchecked, threatened our financial markets.

Even though predatory lending was becoming a national problem, the Bush administration looked the other way and did nothing to protect American homeowners. In fact, the government chose instead to align itself with the banks that were victimizing consumers.

snipped

What did the Bush administration do in response? Did it reverse course and decide to take action to halt this burgeoning scourge? As Americans are now painfully aware, with hundreds of thousands of homeowners facing foreclosure and our markets reeling, the answer is a resounding no.

Not only did the Bush administration do nothing to protect consumers, it embarked on an aggressive and unprecedented campaign to prevent states from protecting their residents from the very problems to which the federal government was turning a blind eye.

snipped

In 2003, during the height of the predatory lending crisis, the OCC invoked a clause from the 1863 National Bank Act to issue formal opinions preempting all state predatory lending laws, thereby rendering them inoperative. The OCC also promulgated new rules that prevented states from enforcing any of their own consumer protection laws against national banks. The federal government's actions were so egregious and so unprecedented that all 50 state attorneys general, and all 50 state banking superintendents, actively fought the new rules.

snipped

But the unanimous opposition of the 50 states did not deter, or even slow, the Bush administration in its goal of protecting the banks. In fact, when my office opened an investigation of possible discrimination in mortgage lending by a number of banks, the OCC filed a federal lawsuit to stop the investigation.

Interesting find there. Sounds as though J. Edgar Hoover is still leading FBI and wearing his best dress and pearls as well.

Gov. Spitzer kept knocking heads with Feds. Bad choice. Feds have more tools and "toys" to undo someone who creates public problems. Spitzer should have taken page from former Governors' of Arkansas and Louisiana playbook. Have all of your arrangements handled by your "handlers" -- loyal staff, supporters, and state police.

Of those former governors are Clinton (Arkansas) now pimping his wife for president and federal prisoner, Edwin W. Edwards. My favorite EWE quote is, "The only way I can lose this election is if I'm caught in bed with either a dead girl or a live boy".

Tommy,
The Republican Preznint G.W. Bush refuses to sign the fisa bill. Putting Americans at risk. He wont sign because it does not supply protection to telecoms for their wire tapping mis-deeds. Spitzeer was going after some big wigs in the banking industry. Spitzer was caught via a wire tap. And this is just what we know now. Imagine what else Bushco is covering up. Actually Bushco does not really care about the telecoms, they are trying to protect their own asses. Think about it Tom, I know you are bright enough to figure this out.

Tom

Spitzer was not caught in a terror-based wire tap - he was caught in a normal investigation. Bush has nothing to do with his demise - it was just good old fashioned immorality that brought him down - but tryingto spin this into a Bush probelms shows you're still as biased as ever. Thank you for being consistent. Creditbility meter down antoher point.

ljb jeez... Spitzer fell on his own sword. Pun intended. He didn't require any assistance in creating his own demise. Yes, he got caught in federal investigation; however, he was not targeted. Spitzer violated laws without any specific instructions from President Bush or other authority.

A wise person told me as youngster, "don't let your little head do the thinking for the big head." Whenever one imagines that he is above the law, he will ultimately be undone.

Look on the bright side, if Clinton or Obama wins election, their first official act can be presidential pardon for Mr. Spitzer.

Is there a double standard here?

In the last few days NY Gov. David Paterson has admitted:

1. his wife and him were adulterers.
2. he has used cocaine and marijuana.

Is the public being more tolerant because he's black? Or are they being more tolerant because he's blind? Or is the public really being more tolerant? (I sense they are.) What's next murder?

But then again, off-topic is DOMINATED by the left, so they don't post much about this kind of stuff when the big (D) sits to the left of the name.

If Patterson were a Republican, there would be about 10 threads asking why this guy hasn't resigned yet....

It's embarrassing to be from the great state of New York these days. Spitzer, Clinton, Patterson.....what's next?

But because he's a Democrat, and the Republican Joe Bruno is next in line to be Governor should Patterson go bye-bye, you guys have clammed up and are hoping it will all blow over....

At least Tom brings the hammer down on Bush whenever he thinks Bush screws up....you guys NEVER drive into one of your own....

Larry Craig was the guy bj'ing in the toilet rooms right?? no different from spitzer really, spitzer likes hookers while he keeps his black socks on, craig likes dudes. You would think guys like these 2 and clinton would just keep their junk in their pants until they are atleast out of office??

I cant believe that someone said the left dominates the off topic. most of the threads that are started are somehow tied to "how dumb the left are"

both sides make their share of sense and nonsense back here. however, it is annoying when the name calling starts.

I just did a quick tally of the last 100 threads in off topic, and the political ones were split right down the middle.....23 from the left, and 23 from the right, according to my count.

So, for the last 100, no one side dominated.

On a sidenote, if it wasn't for JustRalph, the left would have clearly dominated the political discussion in terms of threads started....good work JR!

Historically, the left here on off-topic has dominated, as they are the ones constantly complaining how badly America sucks at the moment...
