does anyone exactly know a sheets # is made ?
I figured someone in here knows

I guess you're speaking of Rag's or JB's sheets.

They're speed numbers first and then an adjustment is made for ground loss and weight.

I did a study of Beyer numbers vs. Ragozin numbers a few years back. About 800 horses that I had sheets on and also had Beyer numbers on going back a year. Pretty strong correlation between the Beyer figs and the Ragozin figs. About .82 as I recall and I know that some of the difference can be attributed to the adjustments that I referred to.

If you want to convert a Ragozin to a Beyer here's an algorithm that has worked well for me over the years:

Rag # = 48.75 + (-.396 x Beyer #)

Example: Beyer of 100

Rag = 48.75 + (-.396 x 100)
= 48.75 + (-39.6)
= 9.15
= 9

You can split hairs about when a 9.xx becomes a 9+ or even a 10- as it nears 10.
