Came across this link, makes for an interesting read
Even one hundred and fifty years ago they were complaining
at the about the sacrifice of stamina to speed and the over
racing of young horses....

By mistake these horses went round the course
once oftener than was necessary, the first heat
making a distance of about five miles and a-quarter,
miles at the end of which Llewellyn was first ; but Tam-

miles, the heat was adjudged to him. "
