I was doing AQ today and they said a horse had "aluminum pads". What are they refering to and what is the significance.

Thank you for your input. I appreciate it.

Two types of aluminum pads.
1. A pad is a protective device which is attached between the horseshoe and foot.
2. stirrup pads.

I suspect they are talking about # 1.

From what I'm told, they're put on the shoe (usually instead of the usual frog support pad) to help protect the frog (and possibly the hoof) and give it some extra support. Aluminum pads are generally used for a cracked or badly bruised hoof, but I'm told they can also be used on hooves that are suspect to injury. It's might be a good idea to steer clear of horses racing with them.

You must be talking about the 4 horse in the 5th today Just le facts, also note the DRF line change from "broke down" to eased. The aluminum pad is a protective pad primarily used by the blacksmith to move a pressure point away from a bruised or injured foot. It is also called a spider, they put holes in the pad and the shoe is then put on, it prevents the frog from hitting the dirt and absorbs the shock. Many horses train in spiders but dont go to the races in them as they can cause a horse to slip and slide on the track surface. Looking at this horse anything should help!

I didn't know what that meant so I decided to stay out of the race. It is bad enough to go into a race wondering if you understand all that you know. I refuse when I don't understand something, even on a bad horse.

Thanks again everyone. :)
