View Full Version : Screen resolution

As we design new stuff, screen resolution becomes quite an issue. The nature of horse racing is that many of the screens could be quite wide because there are lots of columns.

So, my question is, "What screen resolution do you prefer?"

What's the difference and can I change it?

More (and smaller) characters.

Yes, you can change it.

Dave,

I have found that it's best if the application is designed for the very highest resolution.

Why do I say that?

Because with the highest resolution, it is possible to get an overview of all the columns that are available in the output. Then, since screen resolution is easily changeable to a lower value, I can home in on the columns of interest in whatever order that suits me.

To me, that is the best compromise procedure. It is far better than seeing fewer columns with lesser resolution and having to "scan" to see the others, which loses sight of the overview.

I run at 1280x1024, but I've got a big honking 21" Trinitron space heater.

I'd say the vast majority of folks are running at 800x600 or 1024x768.

Personally, I run in 1280 x 960, small fonts. Amazing how the eye likes smaller characters as we get older. <G>

However, I don't like the idea of designing software that makes some people have to scroll the screen to see it all.

800 x 600 is probably the highest resolution (unless you are Paul and can afford a 21" monitor). I'm trying to justify spending the money on a 19" flat panel. At my house I am the only one not using a flat panel and I won't likely replace it until it breaks. (Boy, I hope this one blows up soon.)
