All of those names are taken... after maybe 13 years or so you are allowed to reuse names.... not sure what the exact number of years are could be less....

No way can Secretariat be accepted nor can the name of any other horse in the Hall of Fame. I believe this also extends to the names of all horses which have received Eclipse Awards.

The T-man who for years was one of the top DJ's here in Seattle, owned a horse and tried to name it morning wood and it was dissallowed. However he was allowed to name that horse "Spontaneous Wood"

Click here for The Jockey Club's rules for naming.

Also, FYI, even if a name is initially rejected you can write an appeal letter. We tried to name a horse Iron Curtain and it was initially rejected because there was already a similar named horse Iron Curtains. I did some reasearch and found out that Iron Curtains had never raced or produced a foal and would be over 10 years old if still alive. Upon that appeal Iron Curtain was then approved.

Hope that helps.

There's a pacer currently at Freehold, I think, goes by the name Firm Woody.

My all-time favorite is "Cunning Stunt", a 1969 filly by Young Emperor out of Jet Mist.

Makes me feel dirty just writing this.

Per link below, the comment on her is "Try saying her name straight in a race call". (She had 4 wins and 8 seconds in 16 starts - no idea at what level she ran.)

acceptance of names are either by pure luck or politically acceptable if
you are a big owner.

Years ago 2 horses that ran in NY, owned by a prominent party were named:

Cold as a Witche's

Bodacious Tates

How about TJC allowing the name Cum Floater, a foal of 1977 by Cum Shane. Not sure what that is exactly, but it sounds nasty.

Fozzy Bear. The Jim Henson people requested it to be changed and it was. Did not have permission to use it.

With regards to naming horses, I disagree with them with allowing certain stables to name every one of their horses with the stable name in it. The two that I know of that bother me are KARAKORUM (based in NY) and PYRITE (based in OHIO).

And in Ontario up here, Fieldstone Farms seems to name a huge number of their horses EL GRAN, as in EL GRAN HANK, and EL GRAN MAESTRO, etc.

One of the reasons casual fans don't like horse racing is that they can't keep track of the horses by their names (in many instances).

IMO, repetitive naming with keywords like PYRITE or whatever shouldn't be allowed either. But, what do I know? :bang:

They renamed Fozzie Bear after that court case to BOLD REVENUE.

I remember a huge picture of the muppet character in the Toronto Sun the next day with a big story. I've followed this subject ever since.
