Handle was, for all intents and purposes, the same as 2006. Given the chaos of artificial surfaces and the constant rumors and numerous news stories about illegal medication, I find this surprising to say the least. Imagine if racing were to actually get on the ball and fix a few of its major problems?

In that case, possible increase in handle next time!?!
I think total races run decreasing is bad.

The horsemen were well provided for last year. Total races down, total purses up ... average purse/race way up. No reason to worry about the players when slots are there to take care of the connections.

Sounds good that the per- things are up= $ per-purse, $ payoff per-win on rubber, etc!!

One thing to keep in mind is that because of economic growth and inflation, incomes are constantly rising. So if handle is up by less that nominal income growth, that means racing is actually declining.

Bettors are frequently asking for fewer races at fewer tracks to make them more competitive with larger fields. As long as it doesn't lead to people getting out of breeding and racing altogether, then I don't think this necessarily bad for us.

Field size went down in 1993. From 1994 to present it has remained between 8.31 and 8.14, with 8.17 in 2007.

But, judging by the negative rhetoric on racing lately, I'd view the decline as a positive on the whole...

I know Ken, but the only way field size will ever go up is to limit the number of races but offer purses that give owners a chance to survive.
