I never got the hype and hoopla over the Derby prep season. I don't give ten craps about the Derby contenders until they are indeed IN the Derby. Just one man's opinion.

For some it's like NFL Draft day, or national signing day in college football, or spring training...there's a value for some people in pegging things early on, right or wrong. For some it's the season itself; what good is it to say, "I never care about the World Series until the two teams are set." To each his own, I guess.

The hidden value of the Derby prep season is a long list of good (but not great) horses which are receiving above average training, many of which will end up in allowance and overnight races after they fail to make the cut. It's a good 'harvest' season for those who are keeping track. Just a thought. :)

Well said Norm;

In NY / So Cal I maintain a list similar to that of a racing secretary. I want to know who the top 3yo fillies on the grounds are, older classified types etc…The Derby trail is the same theory, just on a broader basis.

These animals will wind up in every region of the country at some point. It can help to pay attention to the preps unless you only bet a minor circuit and the animals will never appear.

Besides…It’s fun for some of us and even horseplayers need a little of that every now and then…don’t we?

Thanks. I'm sure racing execs don't appreciate me though. Especially those from WEG.
