From the Latin "uxor" meaning of all things "wife". Don't have my dictionary, but I'm betting its a 3rd declension noun by the look of it
The adjective was suprisingly uxorius, -a, -um, meaning exactly the same thing as the English. Why this would be a bad thing to call a Roman would be that women had very little in the way of rights and an "uxorius vir" (vir=man) would be generaly, though not always, considered a bit of a fool.
