Well, this fellow is interesting. Wonder if he'll be able to replicate his success. Not too many out there have beaten 3yos as a 2yo.

Distance won't be a problem either already winning at a mile and a half against three year olds as well, though who knows what the Peru competition is like. We'll know more if he runs next in the Florida Derby or in Dubai as mentioned as plans in the article. Probably get a price in both races. Looks like he comes from the clouds, maybe Street Cry can get back to back Derby wins. Good story.

Considering the $54k in 2 of Peru's biggest races for the win, and Prado's comment about slow Peruvian tracks, it would be interesting to see which track is his first US start!

Is this good/average/poor for a mile breeze?

It's a tad over 12.5 seconds per furlong. Sounds impressive to me considering he was breezing on a training track.

I've been watching this guy with interest since he came to this country. On the plus side, he has classic breeding (same sire as last year's Derby winner), he has beaten older horses and he has already won at classic distances including 1 ½ m. On the minus side, he likes to come-from-behind and is used to running on deep tracks. He has never raced on a track where speed holds up. He has to adjust to a major climate change, the seasons are reversed in Peru. And, he is huge, broad in the chest, 17 hands and growing. I would count his massive size as a negative this early in the year remembering that Forego was also huge like this but didn't become a great horse 'til he got over the awkwardness of being so big later in the year.

We may be hearing a lot from this horse as the year goes on IF he can handle an American racetrack. In one interview I read, his first American start will be the Florida Derby. Seems like a tough spot to 'try him out'.

seems like there is no such thing as an Allowance race to prep these guys anymore?:D

Warpass was criticized for being conservative, but I wouldn't mind seeing Tomcito prep in an allowance - or this Japanese 3yo they are supposedly bringing in to the Preakness.

Sometimes these young horses can keep improving before they are thrown to the wolves

That is too funny ! After reading your post, I read-up on the Japanese horse,
Casino Drive. His trainer is considering using the Preakness as a 'prep' race for his target race, the Belmont. This has the makings of an interesting Triple Crown season !

Interesting is what we need, because other than War Pass, nothing really jumps off the page...I'm going a bit out on a limb here, but that field Pyro beat in a supposed gr. 3 race wasn't much. And it's hard to tell what you've got out west until they run on a real racetrack.

Can anyone out there scrounge up the times for those races he was in and find other races at the same distance from that track and compare?
I liked his stretch kick. That was somewhat impressive, but I would have liked to have seen the times.

According to the timer on the YouTube video, Tomacito ran the distance in (very) roughly 2:40. Prado says it's a deep track and all, but not sure anything close to that time would win the Derby.

I don't go by the YouTube "timer". Most timers don't start as soon as the gates open. The horses are a usually a couple jumps out of the gate before it does.

Just the opposite here. 4 seconds elapsed on the timer before the gates opened.
