According to wikipedia: Russell Baze began his racing career in Walla Walla, Washington in 1973 and won his first race the following year at the Yakima racetrack."

From NTRA website:Began riding at Yakima Meadows in 1974; his first winner, Oregon Warrior, was trained by his father.

I was at:
Sagebrush Downs - Kamloops.
Bookie Parlour.
I seem to recall that I took some money that day from a man called
"Donny Banned Mycheck" or was it Banacheck something to that nature.
At any rate, there was no radio of the race.
There were no TV screens.
There was only the phone... the next day's paper....chalk board...that we used after race to call and make confirmation.

When the phone caller yelled "Baze has lit up the tote."
We thought our local desert forest was ablaze.
