View Full Version : Detroit's Gangsta Mayor

The once proud City of Detroit is (ahem) blessed with the nation's first big city hip-hop mayor, Kwame Kilpatrick.

This man, a Coleman Young on steroids (figuratively, probably literally) is a shining example of an urban emperor out of control. Using the race card in every hand, he is hastening the deterioration of an already suffering city, and, as a result, the surrounding area. He considers himself so far above the law, he and his DPD thugs will even physically attack reporters who dare ask uncomfortable questions.

Hopefully, the sex & text scandal will lead to perjury charges that stick him in jail. Michigan has one of the strongest perjury statutes in the country. ANY lie under oath, regardless of material relevence, is punishable.

But in all likelihood, if he -is- prosecuted, it will end up a hung jury.

Ex-Detroit Mayor Kilpatrick sentenced to 4 months

Story Highlights
Judge sentences former Detroit Mayor Kilpatrick to 120 days in jail, no early release
Kwame Kilpatrick pleaded guilty to charges resulting from a sex scandal
Kilpatrick resigned from office last month
He was accused of blocking a criminal investigation into his office
(CNN) -- Calling him "arrogant and defiant," a Wayne County Circuit Judge on Tuesday sentenced former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick to four months in jail with no early release under the terms of a plea deal.

Kilpatrick pleaded guilty last month to two felony obstruction of justice charges stemming from his efforts to cover up an extramarital affair. He also pleaded no contest to charges of assaulting a police officer attempting to serve a subpoena on a Kilpatrick friend in that case.

In imposing the sentence, Judge David Groner harshly criticized Kilpatrick for his conduct, particularly for a televised speech that aired hours after he entered his pleas.

"That night, the community expected to hear a message of humility, remorse and apology," Groner said. "Instead, we heard an arrogant and defiant man who accused the governor, among others, for his downfall." Watch the judge issue the sentence »

While a presentencing report submitted to the court said Kilpatrick accepts responsibility for his actions, Groner said he questioned the former mayor's sincerity.

"Many defendants have stood before this court. However, this case is different, and you are not the typical defendant," the judge said. "... You were expected to lead from the front and set an example."

Kilpatrick was accused of blocking a criminal investigation into his office and firing a police deputy to cover up an affair with his then-chief of staff, Christine Beatty. When that deputy, Gary Brown, filed a whistle-blower suit last summer, Kilpatrick and Beatty denied under oath that an affair had taken place.

Groner noted that after a jury found in Brown's favor, Kilpatrick publicly vowed to appeal, only to do a "180-degree" turn after he found out the plaintiffs were in possession of text messages that gave evidence of the affair. Brown then urged the City Council to approve settlements, which cost the city $8.4 million -- closer to $9 million after legal costs.

In January, the Detroit Free Press revealed the text messages that contradicted Kilpatrick's and Beatty's testimony.

After the text messages were made public, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged Kilpatrick and Beatty with multiple counts of perjury, obstruction of justice and misconduct in office. The most serious charges would have carried a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison upon conviction.

Beatty resigned her post after the text messages were made public, but the case against her remains pending, Worthy said. The Free Press reported Beatty has rejected several plea deal offers, the last of which would have required her to serve 150 days in jail.

Worthy told reporters after Kilpatrick's hearing that she was satisfied with the result, but could not comment extensively on Kilpatrick's case. "We have another defendant to try," she said. "I don't want to step over that line."

Kilpatrick must also pay the city of Detroit $1 million in restitution, Groner ordered, and forfeit any future pension.

He initially refused to resign, and Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm had called a hearing on whether she should remove him from office at the request of the Detroit City Council. Granholm adjourned those hearings after Kilpatrick pleaded guilty and agreed to resign.

In the speech after he pleaded guilty September 4, Kilpatrick told reporters Granholm and city officials should work for the people of Detroit as hard as they did to get him out of office.

He told the crowd his marriage is better than ever, and kissed his wife to resounding applause when he concluded his remarks. He said he decided to step down so the city could move forward.

Groner also ordered Kilpatrick to sign an order of revocation regarding his law license. Because of a pending complaint against Kilpatrick, he could not surrender the license, but instead had to agree to revocation -- something his defense attorneys argued vehemently against. Groner told them the issue could be raised on appeal if necessary.

The judge did, however, deny prosecutors' request that Kilpatrick repay $22,000 in costs unique to prosecuting his case -- including the purchase of new door locks for their offices.

He also refused a prosecution request to order that Kilpatrick attend anger management counseling based on the July 24 incident involving the police officers, saying it was "an isolated incident" and he knows of no other evidence that Kilpatrick is violent or requires counseling.

Worthy said she was disappointed with that decision, but acknowledged, "It is unusual to ask for prosecutors' costs. ... A lot of judges aren't familiar with that."

Interesting article on how it is going with Mayor Kwame

from the article

On Oct. 29, his first full day, the 38-year-old filled out forms and shopped the commissary, where he purchased two bags of sweet barbecue Better Made potato chips, two granola bars, Suave shampoo, a bottle of lotion, Irish Spring soap and $2 worth of Vaseline. He also bought a hairbrush, two washcloths, toothpaste and two pairs of triple XL long johns. The tab: $40.

The Free Press requested documents about Kilpatrick's jail stay under the Michigan Freedom of Information Act. The county produced dozens of pages Friday, but heavily edited them with black marker. The documents are unclear, but appear to show Kilpatrick had 32 visits during the period. One visit, marked "personal" in records, indicates jail officers escorted Kilpatrick to another floor the evening of Nov. 13, where he remained for 5 1/2 hours before returning about midnight. Such a visit would have been outside normal visiting hours.

Sheriff's Office spokesman John Roach, in response to a Free Press inquiry about the notation on a supervisor's daily log, said the information may be erroneous.

"This may just be an instance where the logging of the mayor's return to the cell occurred sometime after it actually happened," Roach said Friday night. "But to be sure, we're going to identify the officers who were working on that shift and interview them about this matter."

Wayne County Sheriff Warren Evans' administration, which oversees the jail, removed information from the records released Friday that identified visitors and their relationship to the ex-mayor. Officials also deleted people on his phone list, names of county employees guarding him and security information, among other things.

Jeriel Heard, chief of jails and courts for the Sheriff's Office, wrote in a statement that officials properly blacked out information "due to specific inmate privacy and jail security issues." He said Kilpatrick's rights are the same extended to other inmates whose records are requested.

Free Press attorney Herschel Fink questioned the withholding of information.

"Since when is visiting a high-profile prisoner in a county jail a private affair?" Fink said.

Detroit -- Kwame Kilpatrick was sentenced to 18 months to five years in prison today by Wayne Circuit Judge David Groner, who said the former mayor engaged in "contemptible behavior" by hiding assets from the court in violation of his probation.
Groner chastised Kilpatrick before imposing the sentence, and several people in the courtroom gasped when the judge handed down his decision. Kilpatrick's sister, Ayanna, was told by sheriff's deputies to sit down.
"Probation is no longer an option. The terms of your earlier probation no longer apply. That ship has sailed," Groner said. "This is all because of the actions of you, Mr. Kilpatrick. You were convicted ... all because you lied under oath. That lie ... was part of a broader attempt to cover up your misdeeds while serving as mayor.

"You challenged this court's authority," Groner said. "You attempted to utilize semantics and exploit loopholes. The broader context of this issue is that your family living expenses -- including living in a million-dollar home, driving a brand new Escalade and purchasing elective surgery for your wife -- you have made it perfectly clear that it's more important to pacify your wife than comply with my orders."

I grew up in the Detroit suburbs, and lived in the area for 30 years, it really went downhill in that time. Not only Detroit proper, but many of the bordering communities as well. I was glad to escape. There was a time when Detroit was a jewel, but it all went to hell imo.

Immediately following the sentencing, Kilpatrick's employer, Detroit-based Compuware, announced in a release that "Kwame Kilpatrick will be off the Compuware Corporation payroll at the end of the month."
"We don't have any choices. It's an unfortunate situation, and we feel bad for his family, but our hands are tied," the release said

I grew up there. It is actually better now simply because it is empty. (Not economically better, but it is a bit safer.) They are thinking about converting whole neighborhoods back to farmland because only one house in 100 is occupied. Back in the 80s it was the murder capital of the country. Oakland County nearby is still one of the richest places in the U.S., and Michigan in general is beautiful. Just like California. (Why do we put the biggest idiots in charge of our most beautiful places?)

Parts of the inner city are dreadful. Decay, crime, desperation...

Outside of the city, especially in the northwestern and western suburbs, are gorgeous. Some areas are still growing, although at a slowing pace.

Culturally, Detroit has a LOT of cool stuff going on. Great entertainment venues, the Detroit Institute of Arts, fine dining.

Lots of water (you can't drink oil, and you can't drink sand), trees - if the economy wasn't in the toilet, and the politicians so fundamentally STUPID, this would be a great place to live.

A lot of people from the Middle East and India realize this, and are on a "resource grab" here. And us ignorant lazy Americans are more than happy to let them have our fertile lands and water, as long as we can have an iPhone and a chance to stay warm in the winter.

Some places look like they're pullled right out of Escape from LA and plopped down in southern MI....throw a stone across the river, and it'll land in Silicon damned Valley. Heck, come in town for a meeting/business trip or something like that, stick to convention centers and malls and downtown proper and all the cultural opportunities WW mentioned, and odds are you won't experience a whole heck of a lot of unpleasantness - start moving outward into the thick of the city, and that'll change pretty quick, until you start hitting suburbs or Canadas.

It's actually been a while since I was over that way...case in point: I've not yet been to the new bizarro Tiger Stadium (I know...it's been like 1,000 years), but I've heard it's pretty fab...

I've been to Detroit twice for Tigers' games. The first time we went to the original Tiger Stadium @ Michigan & Trumball (right). Now, it looks like downtown Bagdhad!

Went to the new one a few years back- beautiful stade, by the way, and asked a few of the local parking lot attendants what else there was to do. They said: " Walk over to Greektown to the casinos- very nice. "

But added: " MAKE SURE YOU'RE BACK BEFORE NIGHTFALL !!"

We stayed in Windsor- before crossing the border again for Chicago and elsewhere.

I've seen 8 mile- a very good movie, which illustrates the Center City to me perfectly. It becomes me to Motown as much as The Wire does for Baltimore- as in not/never again.

When I was in my 20s, it was sad to see so many American cities in decay and disarray, especially those in the NorthEast. It's good to see some of them rebound- like NYC, but Detroit ? Might as well make it farmland and start all over again.

BTW, TO has never had that problem. And if your thinking that's it's a fairly rich, homogenous city, that is not the case. There are indeed huge rich enclaves here, but also about 7 poor, predominantly low income/social assistance communities. The overall pop of several million is and will be predominantly minority from now on. The diff, I believe, in its livability, is that there is another huge swath of middle class persons and also, all races and cultures mix well, with not one single one dominant and in a majority position.

Depending on your idea of the origin of humanity, we existed for thousands, even millions of years without oil.

Life as we know it has not existed a single day without water.

Michigan has water. A LARGE percentage of the planet's supply of fresh water.

If, as a nation, we were smart, we would realize that fact, and try to make sure Michigan was an American-owned state.

But we are lazy and ignorant. All most people care about is that they can go to the store and buy a bottle of plastic-flavored water. Turn on the tap and Presto! Dihydrous Oxide!

People from the Middle East seem to understand how important water is. We've got to wait until it is a crushing problem before we figure that out. :bang:

Isn't that in the Detroit mayor's job description? Between Coleman Young and Kwame Kilpatrick (and Monica Conyers, etc.) - Detroit holds its own in terms of political corruption!

And what really sucks is how hard Detroit's messes and image tarnish the whole area.

It used to be funny (and yet sad) when I would pick up someone from the airport, and they had a mental picture of the entire area as being part "Robocop", part "Eight Mile". They are amazed when they discover for themselves that outside of the center city there are mostly prosperous, pretty, and safe areas.

Unfortunately, the core city drags the area down. So Americans are surrendering control over the world's greatest supply of fresh water. And people from the Middle East (and, to a lesser extent, India) will cheerfully snatch up an abundance of cheap real estate close to a resource far more valuable than oil.

if you watch the local news, Dallas County has its own criminal activity among county "leaders" of color

John Wiley Price and his posse are going to have a hard time getting out of the mess they're in..... Have heard multiple times the Feds really want to tie in Perot Jr with that crew somehow. That would be the prize. Just haven't been able to tie him in yet.

Now the D.A. (Watkins) is in hot water for having his own agenda in his activities..... Since the mid 80s Dallas politics has become a real pile. The local burbs, no problems of that magnitude

This DA thing is interesting. Still no motives that make sense to me ? This should be interesting to watch.
