Geeze..This time last year,The buzz was about Gulfstream,Havent heard a peep even know opening day has full fields and the 2nd day the same with full fields for the horseplayers. I guess you are down on the way Frankie did things his own way. Please remember that guys like me are trying to bring you a wonderful sport in running our horses.Over the couple of years that I have been on this form,I have come to learn how you the horseplayer is the one to please.Dont let the fact that Gulfstream isnt what it used to be ruin your love for the game.I wish all of you a Happy New Year

Good luck to you, Tom, but as for me, I have ZERO interest in anything Gulfstream has to offer. Tampa Bay is the Florida track.

HAPPY NEW YEAR to you and your family!

Ps, tell Frankee his grandstand needs air in the right rear.:lol:

Aw, c'mon! That's a complete croc. My money is on "guys like" you being in it for:
1) The money
2) YOUR enjoyment of the sport
3) YOUR affinity for horses

Nothing wrong AT ALL with ANY of the above reasons for "guys like" you doing what you do. And I sincerely wish you and all the others great success at it. But "please" don't sugar-coat the real reasons "guys like" you are in the game and expect players to swallow it.

(Frankie gonna toss you a couple extra stalls for this one?)

Thanks Tom,

I'm particularly interested in the Calder shippers at this meeting. Will the daily FLA bred race population help to add entries in some of the open classes? B.H. and the new guy seem to think they can get avg. entries up to 9.5 per race.

What do you think?

I used to look forward to Gulfstream racing. It was a big highlight on the racing calendar. Now, however, it just looks like Calder at a different location. Just look at the purses. So much for slots.

No, he wasn't being a "square shooter" (I think you meant "straight shooter"). He was giving us the ol' "all you guys are down on poor Frankie" BS. Maybe we're down on Gulfstream because it gets worse and worse every year? I'm glad McShell's career is going well, but that doesn't mean I have to throw my money at the "glorified Calder" meet.

Here is a guy (McShell) who happens to be a trainer and wishes you the gambler/ handicapper a happy New Year and some of you degenerates can only respond with negativity.

Well, I wish all of you NEGATIVE types a Happy New Year and hope old Santa brought you a new "Toe Tote Flipper" for Christmas. It sounds as if some of you are getting too old to bend over and turn over discarded totes, anymore. :D ;)

We have shipped into GP this week. Thanks to the hometown guys like Mcshell for making the stay a lot more enjoyable! We intend to go head to head with the best and get our horses in top shape for the Monmouth meet in May. GP is still a great place to race especially if you have fla breds.

I'm hopeful now that the slots have been re-arranged that attendees will like it.
I have to say Stronach seems to have had some track adjustments in 2007- But he is the top owner!

Good Luck Tom,

Gulfstream is one of, if not my favorite meet of the year.
I have always done well there no matter what kind of horses run there.
The one thing that I miss the most is that we don't get to hear Vic S. call the races. He personally added to the flavor of the Gulfstream experience.

Have a GREAT meet and a Happy and Healthy New Years. :)

I have yet to go to the new Gulfstream but I want to see it for myself. Since I live in the cold rustbelt the main impetus for going down there is the warm sunshine. Do I need to buy a grandstand seat if I want to watch the races outside?

OTM Al

No, though there isn't a lot of outside seating at the moment, so get there early, especially if it is a weekend. I hear they are putting up a mini grandstand that will be permanent seeting for a couple thousand, so that should make it much better. I actually still like going there and I think it will come around.

Do I need to buy a grandstand seat if I want to watch the races outside? You don't need to buy a seat. But you might want to do so. PArking and admission are free. Seats in the main grandstand are $3 on weekdays, more on weekends and higher on the big days. During the week, the grandstand is mostly empty. On the other hand, the simulcast mosh pit is almost always crowded.

Here is the new improved North Park area.
You are supposed to feel like you are at the beach.
The sandy area is the new elevated viewing area.
There is also lots of sand in the area under the tent too, and the other end too.

Here is the 1000% truthful  , PR blurb on their website; ( pardon me I've got to get my JetBlue barf bag ). What they dont say is that if you are at track level , you have trouble seeing the horses run live on the track with binocs, as the track is elevated and the track apron where you stand is not, maybe half a horse down the backstretch, you have to watch the video screen instead. And thats why you go to a live horserace ! To watch a video screen of the horses, either on track or in the simo rooms ! And they wonder why people dont come to the track, when they are in your pocket at every turn, and you cant see the live product but have to look at the video screen
. They have to have free admission and parking as casino patrons would not come, but they dont have to worry about that , as they took out half of their machines anyway, because they go to the other 2 places instead. AND they had a world class place before , that everyone loved going to, only they knocked it down and built this white elephant that horseplayers detest and casino players stay away from.

"
Search the world over and you will not find box seats that compare to those at Gulfstream Park, nor will you find at any racetrack an oasis with the distinctive tropical feel and flavor of the revamped north end.

There will be 22 new luxury boxes, each equipped with Internet access, personal-betting terminals, phone service, wait service, granite countertops and plush seating.

The north-end park area will consist of a tiki hut complete with compressed sand and shade trees. There will be free seating for approximately 2,000, and guests are welcomed to bring their own folding chairs if they prefer.

Gulfstream Park President and General Manager Bill Murphy said, “The new improvements are designed to enhance the entertainment experience for our customers. "

But they also don't mention they took out half the seats that originally had been there to put in these new seats, so there is really less seats than before.

I think we need to give GP some time, the main focus was a casino with a racetrack attached. Now they will focus on making the racetrack more comfortable for everyone from the $2 bettor to the high roller. I strongly believe the track will be a fun place to go to once the new construction is completed. The "folding chair" crowd will be back. You cant find a better facility unless you drive 17 hours to the Fairgrounds!

RAther from the High Roller to the $2 bettor. We shall see , however, their past performance lines belies your optimistic view. Track management wants separation from the masses. A real longshot to me; the trackers have departed for Tampa. If you would have told me this 5 years ago, I 'd have laughed out loud. Magna management incompetence knows no limits.

I guess i didnot get , the changes being done there. They took out half of the 900 seats facing the track ? or is this at the paddock ? Could you flesh this out, as i don't understand the changes, just the North end sandbox/bar ?

Loosehorse
01-02-2008, 10:34 PM
Sorry for the confusion. Yes the seats that face the track were cut in half to put in the new box seats. I think there are 22 boxes with 6 seats per box.

The 2008 meeting will be the fourth since the old grandstand was torn down and the third since the new building was completed in early 2006. Unlike the old grandstand, which had more than 20,000 seats facing directly onto the racetrack and an apron area that could accommodate thousands more, the new plant has been less fan friendly. Excluding two dining areas and luxury suites on the third floor, only 900 seats in the mezzanine actually looked out on the racetrack, a number that will be cut in half to make way for the new box seats.

The North Park with the sand box is supposed to be for 2000 people.

I put arrows pointing to the boxes within the old seating. The box seats are behind the walls. I don't know how clear that is in the picture.

Thanks for the clarification on the seating. Since few people were sitting in the seats during the week, it makes sense to try to gouge, i mean cater to the connections . Probably a writeoff . The North Park area has always been the "other side of the tracks" since tent city days. The retrofitting is addressing concerns which were overlooked in the grand Vission of Stronach. He was, and is misguided in his concepts. Gulf used to be a shining star, then it was mismanged and run into the ground to get slots. Still poor quality racing most days, and the place has no heart. A soul less emporium, who tried to change what Gulfstream was and is. Now this season, the few big days of racing w/stakes races has been reconfigured to one or two on a day, and spread them out. Sunshine millions is a misconcieved jackpot for 2nd rate horses who donot deserve the money thrown at them. The place has no buzz, as fans have been more or less runoff. Sad really.

WOW! Very interesting, I guess you didnt realize the ca and fla breds have been right up there with the top horses in the world today. Try on Ginger Punch winner of the 2007 Breeders Cup Distaff. If you go back a few years Peace Rules was another. Dearest Tricksi another Fla bred has a very promising future(32k claim in August). There are a lot of top fla and cal horses. You may be upset that GP isnt the track everyone thought it would be but saying that the Sunshine Millions is for 2nd rate horses is way out of line. Do a little homework and see how many cal and fla breds win major stakes races every year.

For the life of me I am just scratching my bald head about why this failing company (Magna Entertainment MECA stock http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bc?s=MECA&t=2y down from $7 to $1 in five years...from $4.50 to $1 in the last year....how low will they go ) was compelled to build the nuttiest racing facility in America. Yes, the old place was overbuilt for today's reality but the new place is just awful. I'll be in South Florida in a couple of weeks and I'm thinking of driving four hours to Tampa to go racing instead of an hour to Gulfstream.

Wait, I can stop scratching my head over these nutty moves. Frank Stronach is in charge, and Lil Andy is waiting in the wings. The straitjacket gang.

Speaking of pompous phonies......Tom Schell has been on this board a lot longer than you have and has NEVER come across as being patronizing or having an agenda. What is your problem? Exactly what horses would you be betting on if not for Mcshell and his brethren? Who would bring racing to you if not him and his fellow trainers?

Tom Schell has been on this board a lot longer than you have and has NEVER come across as being patronizing or having an agenda.

Perhaps seniority means something in your small world ... accuracy means much more in mine. If he's "NEVER" come across as having an agenda, what was his purpose in writing "I guess you are down on the way Frankie did things his own way?" Perhaps you've forgot, already, but that's from the post with which HE began this thread. No agenda? Why do ya s'pose he started the thread, Cap? Just killin' time?

Exactly what horses would you be betting on if not for Mcshell and his brethren?

Have no idea, since you forclosed on the natural consequence of McShell's absence from the game. Others would take his place ... but, if other horsemen on this board are at all representative, most would not be so pompous as to expect us (well, in view of your post, most of us) to buy into that crap that he's making his living for OUR benefit.

I feel it adds tremendously to this board to have the views and comments of the horsemen.

As do I. But those views are most credible, and certainly more worthy of acceptance at face value, when they concern their area of expertise.

Trainers don't get horses by being contortionists ... so when one goes out of the way to inflate his value by pounding himself on the back, I'll tell him what I think of that effort. (Much as did McS in initiating this thread. He made clear that he's none too pleased with posters who had the gall to criticize his good buddy Stronach last year. Clearly it was his right to do so. Don't others have an equal right, despite being newer to this board, to call him on his OPINIONS?)

Post like yours serve no purpose other than to drive away those that can contribute much more than you with your worthless scorn.

He made the spurious claim. I responded. Where do you get off blaming me for hurting HIS feelings? If he can't stand the smell, he should stay out of the stable ... as should you.

And a violation of TOS to boot.

How typically selective you are in your indignation here, Tommy. No violation in comments such as "Im very surprised you had the "Balls" to use the name Kelso?" Of course not. Tommy likes that poster. That's the primary consideration, isn't it.

Newest Term of Service: Anything goes if it's from posters on whom Tommy is sweet.

BTW ... You never answered the question I put to you late in 2006:
Is there a TOS regarding minding one's own business in the instance of a dispute to which one is not party? (Perhaps you're still workin' on another typically lame joke for that one?)
