The trainer most impressing me so far is Gregory Griffith. He saddled another winner this past weekend at another double digit ($13) mutuel. From 9 starters, he has landed 3 wins and a 3rd for a .370 batting average. A flat bet on each of Griffith's horses would yield a +112% ROI. He's eventually going to cool off and people will eventually catch on, but for now, he's the most consistent trainer in terms of value and performance so far.
It's also apparent that Mike Dini and Mike Catalano loaded for bear early. Catalano is undefeated (3-3-0-0, 1.000) and his +190% ROI (nearly double your return!) has spoken volumes, while Dini (5-3-0-0, .600, +68% ROI) are almost automatic.
Last year's leading trainer, Jamie Ness, is like the sleeping giant who suddenly woke up. 8 starts, 3 winners (all of them this past weekend) and a 2nd for a .444 batting average is the kind of wake-up call you like seeing, especially for a guy who is favored to repeat as Tampa training champ.
Deborah Artz makes the hot trainer alert for now, as she is 4-2-1-1, .722, +245% ROI after a great week with limited stock.
Watch for Bernie Rhone, as he came to town this week. 3 runners produced a $9 winner and a 3rd. Leigh Offutt-Delacour has also found her way onto the board a few times this week as well.
Going cold as quick as he went hot was Charles Fontana, who couldn't even saddle a horse to hit the board in the past few days. He's a trainer who goes on many hot and cold streaks, and he may very well be on the cold side of the coin, so proceed with caution.
Inductees into the "Oh so close.." club are Lori Smock (7-0-3-0), Ernie Poxon (6-0-2-2), and the very snakebit John Bourke (12-0-1-5).
