Favorite: Silver Bells by Wilson Pickett.

Worst: that rock version of Jingle Bell Rock. Not sure who does it, some kinda Springsteen wannabe.

High Culture: “Bereite dich, Zion, mit zaertlichen Triebe” from J. S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEM25w-ZPCI (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEM25w-ZPCI)

Popular Culture: Either Doris Day’s or Marilyn Maxwell’s rendition of “Silver Bells,” the latter from the 1951 film, [i]The Lemon Drop Kid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WItkVK04w_w (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WItkVK04w_w) :)

Least Favorite: “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” the first fascist anthem most kids ever hear. Its lyrics always make me want knock that red-suited rummy for a row of ashcans. “He see you when you’re sleeping, / He knows when you’re awake. / He knows if you’ve been bad or good” evoke totalitarian encroachment upon every child’s inherent rights of liberty and individualism. Clearly it’s not for goodness’ sake that Old Nick implores the weak and helpless to “be good.” :mad: :ThmbDown:

Speaking of fascists, actual and would-be, here’re a few more, with updated lyrics by my favorite among Mad magazine’s “usual gang of idiots,” the great Frank Jacobs:

Up There in His Mansion (sung to the tune of “Away in a Manger”)

Up there in his mansion does Farrakhan dwell;
The Nation of Islam has served him quite well;
He lives in great splendor; he’s never unkempt;
Because he’s a preacher, it’s all tax-exempt.

The floors are of marble, the windows stained glass;
There’s nary a touch that is not upper-class;
The grounds are impressive wherever you gaze--
Which all serves to prove how well bigotry pays.

God Help Us, Louis Farrakhan (sung to the tune of “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”)

God help us, Louis Farrakhan,
You’re really not much fun;
The chances that you’ll go away
We’d say are slim and none.
And yet despite your words of fright
That make most people cringe,
Let’s give thanks … that you’re on-ly on the fringe--
Lunatic fringe--
Let’s give thanks that you are only on the fringe.

O Farrakhan! Yo Farrakhan (sung to the tune of “O Christmas Tree!”)

O Farrakhan! Yo, Farrakhan!
On telecasts you shów up;
With Farrakhan, great Farrakhan,
The ratings always gó up.
Ar-sen-i-o you snowed the most;
He kissed your butt from coast to coast;
O Farrakhan! Yo, Farrakhan!
Excuse us while we thrów up. :D

While we're on the subject of thread hijacking (oh, we're not ? :blush: ), I always thought, "Turn Around, Run Like Hell," or whatever, was creepy. "There is someone ... doo doo doo doo ... walking behind you ..."

Hey, what was Allen Sherman's version of "Gentlemen ?" Something to do with Jerry Mendelbaum ? I loved that guy. He was almost Frebergian in his day.
