I was doing some research this week and I wanted to share ths tidbit:

MCSCHELL RACING INC. pulled off a dramatic double (or
arguably triple) class jump victory last Thursday in the second
race at Calder. The winner's price shined like a beacon on
the tote board, with a bright $29.40 showing the way AND
fired the daily double bulbs for a fantastic $210.80 payout!

Last out winner Judge's Case annexed the early double rear leg
for open $16K claimers, just seven days after his last race
victory over a 'solid' maiden claiming field. Thursdays race was
contested early into a hot pace, allowing Judge's Case to save
some energy for his late charge as he proved best at the wire,
outgaming Zafin to get up in the final strides and win by a
strong neck. My race figures suggest that he may go up a level
and give a top effort under other conditions.

This crafty outfit pulled all of the stops to get a leg up using
blinkers, Lasix and precocious "bugboy" Maynor Lopez to gain a 7
lb. weight advantage for the running. "The rest is just honey and
oats!" said trainer Tom Schell from the winners circle. (imaginary
quote by murph)

The McSchell outfit has been honored this meetng with a barn of
the month award and they have sent several honest runners to
the races over the current season. It appears they may have saved
some of their best running for the later stages of the meet.
We at Thorostats would like to extend our best wishes to these
connections. I expect for the same consistent level of effort
and improvement to continue for their barn.

They are a tribute to the many small famly run operatons that
make racing what it truly is for many of us all across the
United States. When these barns enjoy success competing with
larger, better funded stables, it gives me hope that I can contnue
to compete at the highest level of my game with some of the same
success.

I know it feels damn good to face long odds, then overcome them
to enjoy the well earned fruits of your labor.

It's the Amercan way. Thanks to everyone at McSchell and a
hearty congatulations!

Congrats - When you mentioned JC is 10, I wondered what you plan with him in the future, as he will turn 11 in a couple of weeks. Do they allow 11 year olds to race in florida or elsewhere ? GL

thanks for the post Murph. Tom and I have been working together claiming horses for the last two years, it would be impossible for me to have owned so many horses and for so long. It is very hard for any small outfit to compete, but Tom has always looked out for me. ( he has even let me choose a few of the claims..... none of which have done as well as the ones he has picked out for us :D ) Jason

He ain't doing bad for one of his owners, Chester A. Bishop. 3rd in leading Owners at Tropical @ Calder meet. Hard to believe, 3 years ago Tom had to
beg for stall space and finally was given stalls at the training track. Kirk Zadie is looking over his shoulder.

As far as I know Tom trains and places his horse on an individual basis, which some of the big stable probably cannot do.

I had Debussy when we beat you on May 13th at Monmouth, Judges case came up for second, he is a great looking horse and it seemed as if he began to tail off until October when he won for 5k in a pretty solid field. His back class includes a 112 Beyer and 57-94 in the money thats great. I wish you the best with him!

Hey onefast99. Debussy is a nice horse, but that wasn't us who had Judge's Case then we just claimed when he came to calder for 5k, then won next time out for 16k. That shows what kind of trainer Tom is..
