For all of you who remember when Bob Weems called the action at Atlantic City Racecourse, you'll love this video of Desert Vixen winning the Matchmaker Stakes. Check out the size of the crowd ... and Bob Levy presenting the trophy. Wish I could turn back the hands of time and be right there.

Doc :)Doc,
Do you happen to know if Desert Vixen was actually bred to Graustark and, if so, what the foal was named?

She never had a foal by Graustark. She did have one foal die and she slipped once so perhaps she was bred to Graustark those years but that's not information I can find.

Her four foals were from What a Pleasure, Damascus, Roberto and Northern Dancer.

What a pleasure. Top flight horse and announcer. Bob Weems ought to be "race caller 101". No canned phrases, grunting , growling and trying to pick up the winner on the turn. No standing on one's head and trying to be the show.

You're absolutely right. I grew up listening to Weems and wish more announcers could call 'em like he did. I especially hate when some of these clowns editorialize during the race ... just call the race plain and simple.

The thing that amazed me when I listened to this race again was the number of quality fillies in the field. Jeez, Twixt was a grand old Maryland campaigner, Summer Guest was a Gr. 1 winner of the CCA Oaks, Dogtooth Violet was a multiple graded stakes winner, as was Pink Tights. I always loved Desert Vixen, she won six Grade 1 races and was second in the Washington DC International the year she won the Matchmaker. By the way, the Matchmaker was a Grade 1 the year this video was made.
