I have a Toshiba Tecra 510 CDT laptop that runs Windows 98(I dont believe 2nd edition). My problem is that the computer will not recognize the CD-ROM drive. In Windows Explorer the tree on the left-hand side will not illustrate the CD-ROM(which I think would be either the D or E drive)so therefore, the drive does'nt exist as far as the computer is concerned. Is there any way I can correct this?

There is a good chance that it is shot. Have you tried reseating it just in case it might be a connector problem (unlikely but possible).

Win98 can have this problem when certain virus's are present.

Does it light up? how about on Boot up?

can you drop to dos and try to use it?

shutdown, shutdown in MSDOS..........if I remember right..........as it shuts down to dos mode........watch for a driver to load...........

if it lights up................seems to be powered.........toss a win98 disk in the drive and see if you can boot from it................that will tell you something

watch for a driver to load.... go into device manager (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/285122). Make sure windows recognizes the driver, may be corrupt.

could be, you are not booting in the right (correct) drive.

i might be way off base here, but, when booting an "F" key might bring you to the correct drive. which "F", not sure, 8, 10, 12 ?
