Some food for thought (your responses will be greatly appreciated): The workouts are the second thing I look at when I go to handicap a race. When I looked at todays, I thought to myself "What's up with this trainer?", Jeff Ordintz for the #3, Karakorum Sunshine. Works are mostly at 3f and appear to be pretty decent. Then when I look at his past performances, the LAST WORD in 7 of the 10 races is the word "T-I-R-E-D"....and that was at 6f, THE DISTANCE OF TODAYS RACE!!! Now, how can or why would ANYONE in their right mind bet on THIS horse today? I sure wouldn't. Oh sure, his early pace figures are the best of this field, that that is only for HALF of the race. The LP numbers are not too impressive: 82, 39, 68, 74, 57, 69, etc. Being fairly new (almost 4 years at this "game"), seems to ME that one would want to work a horse at a LONGER distance, maybe 5 or 6f, and run ar 6, rather than work a horse at 3f and run at 6f. SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME IF I AM MISSING SOMETHING. Thanks

I agree, 3F works can be used to sharpen early gate speed, this horse doesn't have a problem there. In my opinion 4F, 5F works would be a better choice to build some stamina & condition. On the Aqueduct inner track, her speed could carry a long way, especially if he can shake clear early. She did break her maiden in that fashion over the inner dirt in a wire to wire fashion. Last race was pretty sharp. May have the pace scenario she is looking for today. Raced 38 days ago and only 1 3F work 8 days ago, I agree Rookie , would like to see a bit more in the morning myself. I didn't handicap the race yet , but I am pretty sure she will not be my selection.

I know some owners and from what they tell me unless you are at the track during the workouts you really dont know what the horse worked.they may have worked him longer and just timed the 3 f,if the horse was working in tandem with another horse and horse A ran a 1:02 for 5 f and horse B ran 59 both horses would get credit for the 59.The best advice i got on works is see how often the horse worked,study the trainer and see how often he works a horse leading up to a win.
But I have given up on trying to use works into my handicapping ,so i am hoping others chime in here to clear up the confusion i have right now.

As far as #3 i was really tempted to make that pick because speed holds up well at the Big A ,but this race is for me almost impossible to bet.
This race is a complete reversal of the previous 3 ROD,S which for me were no brainers and try as i might i could not get by the ML fav.

Inner speed is the king at the big A right now and cold weather tends to help that speed I hear, so I figure those outside non-speed horses are out of the picture. #12 Twistaway has some speed and looks fit, but that post doesn't help with a sprint race, and she hasn't shown much when running outside...You've got to think #3 Karakorum Sunshine is all about speed and I see that 3f work mentioned earlier...3f doesn't bother me as much as not seeing very many lately--1 work since her last race? #7 Lady Rizzi is turf to dirt, steady works, ok trainer & jock stats but look at all those trouble lines--she's bumped, she stumbles, she hits the gate, took her outside last time-probably a good idea but not with this track...#5 City Spirit has the distance, but what happened to the speed? Well...I've got to go with the speed--

Good thoughts, Sally, and you bring up some very good points. I haven't played the BIG A that much, but the info on the inner track I WILL file in memory. I agree with you about the speed of the #3, but I have to keep going back to the comments about tiring and that makes me a little hesitant. I am hung up between the 7 and the 12, and I think the outside post is a detriment today, so that leaves me with the #7 as my first choice. My second choice will be the #10, Vilify based on late speed, recent works and it looks like she can handle the distance and the competition. GOOD LUCK EVERYONE
