I was told by more experienced folk that if you eliminate Maiden races your odds of picking winners improves. Opinions please. Also any other suggestions for eliminating races?

I was told because Trotters break stride much more often you do better not betting on those races as well.

Well both those things are definitely true for me but may not be so for others. Usually the only time that I will play a trotter is when it's a horse that I like at big odds, or when a trot race is part of a Pick 3/4. And I never-ever-ever use a single in a trot race.

Miaden races are a rarity today.

Non-winners of one pari-mutuel (nw1) that are non-winners of X-dollars, with allowances, however is quite common.

Neither pacing or trotting are the nautural gait of the horse (galloping or breaking is).

Should you be so concerned with breaking horses?
Perhaps this breed is not for you?

I was told pacers don't break stride as often as trotters and when your horse breaks stride its all over..trying to eliminate races that are easy to lose.. ;)

Claimers for $5000. or less are also harder to handicap (this I read somewhere)..

I guess that makes sense..lack of consistency?

Horse racing is all a crap shoot. Trotters generally break more than pacers. I often joke that with young trotters they should run a side pool where you can bet on which horse won't break. :)

What do you mean by 'harder to handicap'?

Well they aren't allowed to race under 2, so don't worrty about those :-)

I just wouldn't lump NW/1 or lightly raced, newer horses with $5K claimers. Different worlds

I agree.Different worlds. What makes cheaper claimers challenging is that most are broken down, but some can go on long winning streaks when they are not feeling the pain. When you see a solid trainer jack up these horses more than one claiming level after recent success, look out. Some go off at nice prices because of the class hike.

Actually, the favorite does better in maidens over the long run. I do find this baffling with so little information available to the capper.

Never bet a Tbred with odds of less than 4-5. Always bet a favorite with a 5 lb bug.
