Here is an interesting article talking about economics in the good ol US of A under our federal policies for the last 20 or so years.
Snippet
The OECD ranked the after-tax income of the average worker in the United States as 15th among its member nations. The richest middle class, if measured in terms of the purchasing power of their income, was Britain.

Bush addressed this problem with tax cuts.
Wait until the dems pass that ridiculous tax hike that Rangle is proposing.
We will be 55th! The average working American pays far too much tax carrying the dead weight of those who do not contribute. Professional freeloaders in many, many cases - entire families of dead beats, generation after generation of losers.

Tom, you must stop parroting the corporate line. Bush's tax cuts for the rich and famous exasperated the problem. The professional freeloaders you speak of are those in the top 2 percent earnings. They reap all and more benefits provided in this country at a fraction of the cost we, the middle class, are paying. By generation after generation you must be referring to the Walton family. Warren Buffet had the correct take on this. People should earn their wealth not inherit it.

And they should not aquire it by having it stolen from them either, like the welfare programs that have failed for decades. That is a hallow statement coming form the paerty of theft - the taxocrats. People inherit thier wealth when the rightful owners - thier parents generally - leave it to them. THEY own it, they get to decide who gets it. Anything else is communism and robbery.

You still singing that song about tax cuts for the rich? Man, you gotta be kidding - I can't believe anyone in this day and age can't figure that one out.

Are you expecting Santa Claus this year?

STOP THE PRESSES, I have to agree with Tom on the estate tax.
Those that want to (Buffet-Gates) can make certain that the wealth is not passed down to spoil their children.
Just write a big check to several charities or the gvt will take money you don't owe them, really they will.

God I hope this doesn't mean a dozen bannana a day "jones" starting now!

By Welfare are you referring to the farm bill ? or just the tax breaks for Wall street brokers etc. And I am sorry you are still having problems figuring out the tax cut for the rich and famous. Normally you have a good grasp on things but for some reason you seem to be blocked in this area. Do you make over $200,000 a year ? If so, i understand your sentiments and you need not reply.

No, the how many trillion dollars thrown down the toilet since the 1960's.
The war on poverty. No exit strategy. Countless billions gone. Millions of families destroyed. The war that drawfs Iraq's cost.

Tax cuts were given to EVERY taxpayer, ergo, it was not a tax cut for the rich. I got a refund. nowhere near what some rich dude got bac, but then again, I didn't pay anywhere near what he did. I can grasp that idea just fine - you get back in direct proportion to what you put in. It was a tax cut, not welfare. You miss your check in the mail?:(

It was the tax cut that pulled us out of the recession Clinton left us in.

The war in Iraq, Trillions of dollars in debt passed on to your children. (For Shame), Countless innocent lives lost. (For shame). Wall street folks claim their bonuses as capital gains (15 percent tax vs. 35 percent you pay) for shame. You do not get back in direct proportion to what you earn. The rich get back a much larger percentage. Giving breaks to the rich is corporate welfare Tom, The bills being run up by the neocons will have to be paid someday and giving excessive tax breaks to the rich creates excessive burden on the middle class. Call it what ever you want. I call it welfare.

Do you really think that carrying dead weight is what costs the average american taxpayer? Have you looked recentlly at the national debt? Tax cuts? Wanna see some spending, give those upper 10% tax cuts to the lower 10%. Bush has addressed nothing but tranfering more wealth from the poor to the rich. Who do you think is benefitting from the Iraq war. It ain't the average Joe in America. What this country needs is an overhaul that isn't going to come from a repiblican or democrat.

The Clinton recession? Oh man. This is a great county where Arnold gets a tax break while children go without health care. Nice. Let's see how much tax should a $30k earner pay? What do u think?

I agree. Nobody complains about the trillions in welfare to the ulta wealthy, just the single mothers. WHat is wrong with the people in this country.

Tom,

In 2003, the US paid 17.4% of GDP revenue in tax.
UK paid 36% ie more than double. We also have VAT tax of 17.5% on top which is similar to your local sales tax.
Today, UK gas is taxed to $10 a gallon and you pay $3.
For housing, we pay 3-4 times the US cost.
We have had a socialist Government for the last 10 years - the 6th since 1945.
If you take out our 6 weeks annual holidays, both countries have roughly the same GDP per person.

There are two things to think about here:

1. In European terms, US hardly pays tax, so cuts of a few percentage points of any sort are relatively ineffective. Do European higher social taxes and pooled benefits not actually create a more successful and cohesive society at every level?

2. If we in UK have the largest amount to spend after tax, where does all the money go to in US? It is certainly not to the pay packets of US middle or poorer classes.

GDP for (the first time ever) of the bric countries, passed the USA, just the other day.

Russia, China, Brazil, England, vs the USA. not bad...

Gdp for the USA is about twice that of England citizen.

Tax income for the USA reached its highest levil ever, as in never before, as in after the Tax cut.

 Corp tax in the USA is much higher than that of European. ALL countries that gain on the USA GDP have a lower tax %.
