We are supposing that we all bet 6.00 total or 2.00 ATB and as such will collect any slots that it hits and the slots below it also.

If I make a mistake adding then you or others should let me know. I check my work a little but don't painstakingly check and re check it.

i cant find the original thread that started this contest but i recall something about geting everyone talking about handicapping.lets concentrate on not just posting a pick but a brief explanation.this board had several capprs point out the top 2 finishers in a 21k super not to mention the 2 and the 8 that rounded it out,i am totally disgusted with my self for not refering to the board before i made my real bet.the top of the leader board had the winner pegged and someone else who tabbed the 5 mentioned the connections as his main reason for the selection.i had the 6 as my primary and the 2 as my secondary and mentioned the 8 as a key horse.to have 3 parts of that super and not hit is unconcionable, let alone 2 parts of the tri .

is there a spell check on this board? i dont se it

icebak

I have no doubt that if the members of this group handicapped and bet the super in a systematic way, we would have had it easy. The problem is that we are acting individually.

There is a certain logic to it. We all know that the fewer in our win pool, the better. While most of us are likely modest betters, and I haven't done the math, it is possible that a "big bomber" could impact the pools - especially at the smaller tracks.

I am sure that the majority in this group are worthy handicappers. I also think that we are here for the competition, but I think we all also want to know how we stack up against other members. If we contribute too many of our handicapping secrets then it will be harder to win. Essentially, if we make too good a case for out selections there may be somewhat of a "consensus factor."

Perhaps we could come up with a way of locking in our contest selections before we discuss the reasoning. That way we could profit for real without effecting the outcome of the contest. Maybe we should have to supply our selections 12 hours in advance or something?

That said, I think most of us are generous with our picks and would gladly contribute to the common good. As an experiment, I am personally - time permitting - going to supply a bit of my reasoning with my future picks.

Maybe we need to have this group work on some other races in a new handicapping thread. maybe we'll eventually form a "super syndicate." I'd love to meet in the "war room" sometime.

Good luck and I look forward to some ideas.

In response to Icebak last post, how many of you would really change the way you bet or what you bet based on someone elses opinion. I am a newbie in the scheme of things and I even hit a 20-1 shot a few weeks back. That does not make me a guru, just one lucky little boy. I seriously doubt that one of anybody's bet affects the outcome of one race that much.

I am curious, what is the average payoff a pro makes and does anybody really think anybody can affect a outcome in a pool even if we all bet the same way?

Am I looking at this wrong?

Thanks and I would appreciate your respones.

I know how to cap and the main reason I want to hear others opinion is in case I ' missed something" mostly and hopefully I might be reminded of something about my capping that i've neglected.

It's been 5 races, 95 more to go, alot's gonna happen.

I will run down a race (give my opinion) and it will run exactly as I said it would with the speed being the speed, the raters rating and the closers closing and it will run first second and or first second thrid 4th st8 super and the next time it will make me a fool when I don't even hit the board.

The point I want to make is when you give your opinion as to why you think a horse will win you are putting your neck out on the chopping block.

For anyone who has watched the movie Let It Ride my picks are there for you to use just like Richard Dryfuss used them from others.

When It comes to turf i will rarely bet the speed unless he really really jumps out at me.

This is a turf race and I like the way Love Handles closes. 5-5 on the board for turf races. Think his class is just a little lower then this race but over looking that. Negative is the speed, there really isn't gonna be much least wise in fractions. Hoping Argentina will pick it up at some point and Love will follow.

We have to remember that if you ran this exact race again tomorrow, the result would be different. I considered the race to have several nearly equal contenders and could have made several plays that would have been equal from a handicapping perspective.

I considered Seemingly, but ultimately went with perhaps better connedtions, or whatever. The point is I would have made just as smart a bet with the 6 or the five and if I had been here at post time I might have liked the 6's higher odds.

I think most of the picks today were smart ones and by skillful handicappers. If I see a good handicapper pick a horse that I dismissed I'd be a fool to not have another look, but ultimately I will make the decision. If someone points out something I missed, it could and should effect my selection. But that's a good thing, i think.

It's not just their opinion, if they are decent handicappesr, they may simply point out something pertinent that you missed. After all, in many cases at least, 20 heads are better than one.

You are right that it is unlikely that any bet by any one of us will efffect the pools, it is more the principle. Those of us who profit are essentially doing so on the backs of those who don't. That is a fact of the paramutual system. In reality, there is, or rarely is, and significant negative effect. But there are mad bombers out there who regularly impact the pools. There are likely some very big betters among us. My opinion anyway.

But that shouldn't stop us from sharing info. It's just a fact of the game that is worth considering.

On the issue of your lucky 20-1. The main issue you should be concerned with is "was it a good bet or not."

You are right, at the very least the #5 was a legitimate contender. I get more bad beats by throwing out a low-priced legitimate contender, that I don't feel warrants their low odds, than I do by missing unpredictable longshots. I usually have the longshot and miss the 5-1 I hated for second or on top. Tuff game huh?

I once read an article by a self-proclaimed professional capper from NY. He said that he learned to pass most races and when he had a lecitimate longshot he covered him with bets so that when he was right about the shot, he usually cashed big on the exacta, trifiect, pk3 etc. You get the point.

I am developing my method of handicapping and I always bet my way. Otherwise why go to the work and bother? There are lots of other players better than me and I try to learn as much as I can along the way. That is my I appreciate any response, good or bad, beause it is better than no response. (IMHO)

That is why if anybody wants to use my picks it would be a pure ego trip for me.

BTW, that 20 - 1 shot was my sytem pick and I bet it. That makes it a good bet, (IMHO).

Taken from a DRF article.

Argentina clearly is the class of an eight-horse field in the Cardinal, and if the right trip unfolds for her this time, it is not difficult to envision her successfully capping a 16-race career that began in France and will now consist of 14 group or graded attempts, eight of them being Group1 or Grade 1.

If she is to fail, Criminologist is the most likely spoiler. A markedly improved filly since the calendar turned in January, Criminologist will be shooting for a fourth straight victory, having won her first graded race last month, romping in the Grade 3 Athenia Handicap at Belmont Park.

Fringe contenders in the Cardinal include Nottawasaga, a Canadian invader with Kent Desormeaux named to ride, and Candy Ball, a regular on the Texas-Louisiana circuit who will be making her first start since Bret Calhoun assumed her training from Andrew Leggio Jr.

The rest of the field is Jade Queen, Mama I'm Home, Bicoastal, and Love Handles.

First post Saturday is 12:40 p.m. Eastern.
