Want to start a horse pickin contest to see who the best of the best is on this forum, yes, i like i am one of them. It's real simple, pick one horse each day for one race only ( bris free ROTD ) and I will update the stats every week, more if I have time. Will supply link to free ROTD pp's.

Rules :

1. Pick one horse with an alternate in case of scratch
2. 2 scratches and you are S O L for that day
3. You collect the money that you hit on the board
4. No editing of posts
5. Post before race
6. Lasts 100 days
7. Join anytime or as often as you like
8. Starts tomorrow so please sigh up by saying your in

This is a tough one, or is it easy? Hard to go against the fav, especially the way she drew off and won against the speed of Seek the Truth. If those early fractions didn't do her in, perhaps nothing will. I'm gonna bet against the quality of the starters at Delaware (Private Hall) and stake my wager on True addiction to wear Harvest Lisa down at the wire.

I hate to be churlish about all this, betsall.

I realize that it's only for fun and I appreciate all the effort you're putting in tallying the results.

BUT......

I order to be realistic, shouldn't everyone have to specify the horse they are picking AND the type of bet they are making with the $2 they have to wager on that race?

The way it is presently up, the show pickers are being rewarded as if they wagered WPS, a $6 bet; the place pickers are being rewarded as if they wagered WP, a $4 bet; and the win pickers are being rewarded as if they only wagered a $2 W bet.

I think this could be a very instructive handicapping simulation for everyone, but to offer 'real world' insight, it has to be anchored in a realistic betting situation. In the long run, winning at the races is about collecting more than you wager. My contention is that if you only bet WIN, you have a much better chance of collecting more than you wager than if you bet WPS, where you wager 3 times as much but are likely to collect only twice as much as you would if you bet on winners only.

My main goal is competetion, pure and simple, actually think it makes me cap better even though i missed this first race. Secondly I want to know where i am hitting, example.....100-22-55-5. Sure that could be thought thru to be useful. Not sure this contest is meant for much more then that except to maybe see who's a decent picker. Another reason would be if people would talk about the races it would give us all insight to others thinking and maybe to realize something we missed or whatever. I will run down a race sometimes but usually want to wait on a race where i'm confident.

As far as winning money my own personal feeling about that is you can't unless you bet the exotics and go deep.

Think this race sets up for a rater(The Hoopster) or a closer(Golden Capote) as I see the speed(Devil Red) missing except for maybe 3rd. See Record Run possibly getting a piece. Was going to comment on the distance the stretch has as far as being good or bad for the finishers but DRF doesn't list that info for that track.:confused: Also not sure how others feel but I'd rather be looking at DRF pp's but these will work in this situation.

Why are you adding only the win bets for the winners, but place and show bets for the others? Why not add the total of wps wagers for your selection? It seems that those who picked the winners are being penalized. Is there a pecedent for this or is this idea new?

Otherwise you are penalizing those who picked the winners and your stats will be distorted. As Burl said, if you pay a show horse on his win bet you should pay the show bet on mine, after all, I finished ahead of him. Either that, or you should have to specify win, place or show only in you selection. It really isn't difficult to change and I'm sure most would agree. Perhaps a poll.

This is how I am thinking. You pick a horse and whatever slot ( wp or s) it hits thats the money that you recieve and written down along with where it hit. example....

First slot is how many trys.


Your suggestion about adding the wps spots together is a good idea along with othwe ideas I have about going more in depth and adding a bankroll for everyone or letting others bet exotics or whatever bet they wanted but just decided to keep it simple.

Let me assume you mean like the example above which actually happened yesterday. My thinking there is that I would have rather bet a place bet and won 14.00 then place a win bet and won 13.20. Hoping the furture results will be easy to determine.

Did not pay a show horse on someone's win bet, those that got paid a show place actually placed in the show slot. You get credit for which slot you hit,only. I also didn't pay a show placing on Burls win horse.

what do others think?I wasn't going to complain, but as long as you're asking, no, it doesn't really make sense, and I've never seen a contest tallied this way. By the end of the contest, we won't even be able to figure out who (if anyone) had a positive ROI, because the payouts don't correspond to how bets are actually placed. If we're able to "bet" $2, and get paid off at the highest payout on the board, everybody ought to end up with well over $200 by the time 100 races are done... but that sure doesn't mean we were all "profitable".

My thinking there is that I would have rather bet a place bet and won 14.00 then place a win bet and won 13.20. I would assume that the people who liked the place horse liked him to win, not finish 2nd. In other words, in an actual betting situation, that $14 place payout would be cut into by the bets in which they used that horse on top.

Here is another potential problem that could happen. If a big chalk has a ton bet on him to show and runs out of the money and you have enormous show prices and your horse wins then you won't get the show money in your total. Let's say my horse wins and pays $15.80 but pays $43.60 to show then I really get screwed but the guy or gal that ran 3rd will make out like a bandit and that doesn't seem fair either. Now this may not even happen in the contest at all but if it does be ready for stuff to hit the fan. Just a thought that I had and thought I would bring it up. :)

I think the only way to make this contest fair is, if you want to pay for the slot you hit, you must specify WIN, PLACE or SHOW on your wager. The only fair way to do this is to pay everyone for all positions for the first race (or not count the first race) and then change to specifying win place or show on subsequent days. There is no way to make your way work. I think you will find that almost everyone would agree, either pay wps, or you have to choose your two dollar bet. Otherwise place and show are getting a $4 and $^ bet respectively and winners are only getting a $2 bet. It simply isn't accurate. Horses that place and show get an advantage over winners. The best solution is to pay wps, period.

Although I dont wish to play,I can offer a solution.

If Betsall wants to keep the same format he's using presently,he needs a different scoring format. 3 points for 1st place finishes. 2 points for 2nd place and 1 point for 3rd. Using the $ payouts is inaccurate in this kind of scoring. Otherwise:

Each person should get $6 per race. Bet $2 accross the board ,$6 to win or any combo. That way when someone gets $5 to show he actually lost $1 if he bet accross the board,And when another gets $5 to win,he actually made $11 if he bet it all to win. This is more in line with the real world.

If you have ever played the Keeneland contest, it seems that betsall's approach is similar, except they only credited you with points on a win and place basis with no show money involved (this would take care of the concern about large show payoffs in a bridge jumping scenario). The player would pick a horse in each race and if it won, he would get the win payoff only, no place money. If the horse placed, he would get that return. Huge number of people participate in that contest and if you know the criteria going in I don't see any real reason to complain, either play or don't play.

For what it's worth, while I can be counted amongst those that would opt for a scoring method that would more easily be translated to ROI performance, on some basis, you have my support 100% for scoring as you established it. I believe the positives associated with your contest far outweigh the negatives.

In my opinion, there is some nice value in having numerous board members focus on and weigh in on a specific race on a daily basis. I have thoroughly enjoyed following others selections and reading their supporting thoughts when provided. I would also enjoy hearing some thoughts after the race as to what happened and why? Sure it is "Monday Morning Quarterbacking" but I believe there is some value in reviewing races after the results are in. Yesterday, for example, I felt the combination of Harvest Lisa's outside post, move up in class and low % jockey made her somewhat vulnerable, I was still surprised at how poorly she performed. Anyone else have any thoughts as to why such a sub-standard performance, other than "she just didn't fire"?

As for the scoring, at the end of the day, those at the top of the standings will have likely done a nice job of selecting horses. Do many feel that their selections would be different if the scoring method was modified to say Win only, or WP, or WPS? For me personally, I do not think so. If this is true for most, I see no harm in someone posting alternative standings based on their preferred scoring approach if they are willing to put the time and effort into it. This would seem to be any easy solution.

For me personally, I thing the best scoring method is to use a $2 Exacta Box on the top selection and 1st alternate. Therefore, my version of the current standings is as follows:

I see it this way! ...

This is in no way a contest of seeing who is a better capper because it's not about who picks the most Winners if he ONLY gets the Win money!

On the other hand it may be the guy who sits back & plays nothing but longshots & hope he hits the board. Say it only shows & he pays $15.00 to show. Well then why not just play long shots period! This type of player may win less races but score more money by getting the benefit of a $6.00 ticket, (W-P-S) vs the guy who Wins & only gets the benefit of a $2.oo ticket. You may pick many more Winners but still lose the contest! It's not a fair deal here.
So then it becomes a question of what's the point? I mean if it's about the player who runs in the money more than anyone then just throw out the money concept of it & see who has the better finishes in thier races! This current way is not a fair representaion to the Winning player!

I feel your pain. You try and do something fun but it tends to go south on you a bit. Problem as I see it, the rules and your intention wasn't crystal clear in the beginning. Had it been that way, much less grief would be showing up here on everyone's part.

I for one, feel it not fair in relation to a contest. But had it been stated we are going to play on one race and just see where our picks hit, then that would be a whole different magilla. There then would be no need to even include payouts. Just at the end, who has the most winners, if best placing is what you are looking at, would be sufficient to declare a winner. Maybe as a prize, free admission to join pace advantage.

But as you have stated it's your contest. I support you whole heartedly in that. But for my part, I must withdraw my name and participation. I wish you nothing but good luck and fair sailing in this venture.
