Y'all,

I decided to select Captain Backfire in Race 3 at the Big A in the NYRA Showdown on November 8th.

I figured that he would hit the board. I also thought that if he was scratched that the likely favorite and automatic backup selection would be Rollers who also figured.

Both Captain Backfire (my selection) and Rollers were scratched. The post-time favorite in the race was Be Bullish who carried the weight of those who selected Captain Backfire and Rollers in the resulting four horse race.

You guessed it Be Bullish finished fourth and took 29% of the Day 2 contestants to the sidelines.

$10 - easy come, easy go.

...And that's one of my main complaints with the game.

The concept is fabulous -- a contest that entices people to take a look at the entire racing card. Surely there is some ancillary wagering that goes on because people have already looked at the card for the contest.

But that's all mitigated by a one-and-done set-up.

Two days in and only 28% of the players remain. So the vast majority of those people that were looking at the entire card -- and might have wagered because of that -- are now on the sidelines. After only two days.

At this pace NYRA might start up another one before Thanksgiving.

Another 191 players out after 3 races today.

Maybe they should change the contest to be like baseball -- you get three strikes before you are out.
