Suddenly I've got like a 30 second delay when I click on my desktop before I even leave the desktop and go to a site . I use a cable modem , could it be the modem or should I look elsewhere ? Ran a virus-scan which was clean . Any ideas ? Thank You !!

It is likely in the cable companies servers. They are probably over-loaded with traffic when your trying to get some action in.

Start -> Run -> cmd

In the windows with the DOS prompt, enter this command:
ping www.google.com

you should see something like this:
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\-your ID here->ping www.google.com

Pinging www.l.google.com [74.125.19.103] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 74.125.19.103: bytes=32 time=35ms TTL=242
Reply from 74.125.19.103: bytes=32 time=36ms TTL=242
Reply from 74.125.19.103: bytes=32 time=35ms TTL=242
Reply from 74.125.19.103: bytes=32 time=36ms TTL=242

Ping statistics for 74.125.19.103:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 35ms, Maximum = 36ms, Average = 35ms

if it times out or the values for the various round trip times are huge, you have a problem with either your computer or your ISP. If your values for pinging Google are ok, try the other site you are trying to use. Again, it might time out or return huge numbers. If Google returns good numbers but your other site is returning bad numbers, you know it's not your computer or your ISP and is very likely the other site.
