Asbury Park Press - Phone, Web wagers overwhelmed system
Asbury Park Press

"New Jersey's horse racing industry missed out on substantial revenue from the Breeders' Cup when the state-run Internet and telephone betting system ground to a halt while the races were being held at Monmouth Park Saturday. A 'choke' took hold of the system at various times when high numbers of customers tried to place bets, officials said.
"The glitches came at a time when the racing industry is strapped for cash.
"... The system handled $643,800 in bets Saturday - far below projections - as those trying to place bets met with long outages.
"... 'It's hard to tell how much, but we lost business on Saturday,' (NJ Account Wagering Director Carol) Ciarco said."
