Suppose a horse is 6-1 with 10 minutes left to post time. How much money will have to be bet on this horse before the odds drop down to 5-1?
I haven't paid too much attention to the money pools in the past, but now I need to.

That all depends on how much money is bet in the entire win pool...

You see, to get each horses odds you just divide the entire win pool by the amount that the horse in question has bet on it to win...

So, at a smaller track like Emerald Downs, a $200 win bet could easily do that. At Santa Anita or Aqueduct, it would take more like a couple thousand to make the same change in the odds...

Hope that helps...

Don't forget to deduct the takeout from the win pool first.

Even aside from the takeout, dividing the pool by the amount bet on the horse doesn't give you the odds. You have to subtract 1.

Odds for particular horse = (Total Pool/Amount Bet on Horse) -1

It depends on a lot of things. At a large track like the major New York or Southern Cal ones, a lot of money is in the pool by 10 minutes to go. At most tracks, only about 5% of the total money to be bet is in the pool at that point. At the really small tracks like Penn National, Charlestown, Delta Downs, etc,, you'll find about 1,000 in the win pool at 10 minutes to go, maybe 3,000 with 4 minutes to go. 70-80% of the win money at the small and medium size tracks comes in from 1 minute to post until off time.
