The people in the know, Informational technology people, are abandoning Microsoft in droves. My wife and many in her department, sick of the security holes left in Microsoft programs in order to spy on users, are moving over to Apple. The graphics are better, the programming easier....The only drawback is that there are not as many applications that transfer, but the tide is turning in their world.

It seems we're getting off the subject. Microsoft. My wife bought one of the new vista operating systems in her new HP computer. No one told us that this was going to be a complete departure from what has occurred with new operating systems in the past. There is little software that is existing that we have found to be able to run properly in this new operating system. Further, microsoft passes the buck, by explaining that it is up to the software manufacturers to ensure that their software will run on the new vista system. The software manufacturers say that microsoft should have made their product compatible with existing software. No one will accept any responsibility. Now she has a brand-new computer which is essentially useless to her, until and unless someone blinks and takes the responsibility for this problem. If anyone has an idea how to deal with this problem I'm all ears.

Get XP and have it installed on your computer. Go to a reliabe local dealer.
This is wink and a nod deal between MS and hardware sellers to force people to replace perfectly good printers, scanners etc.
As the customer, your are last on the list of MS or the hardware whore's list of concerns.

Thanks, Tom, I've heard that already from a young computerr guru in our community. Believe that it's probably the way to go, but pisses me off to have to do it. Thanks again.

I only got Xp last year. I kept 98 as long as I could.;)

MACs now come with an Intel chip that allows them to run MS Windows. So that makes a lot of people happy - can have MAC and Windows. I think you can still run MS Virtual Machine on Macs as well.

Actually the latest thinking of MS is that too many people are not happy with Vista, especially the business community. So what they have done is to offer a special version of XP so they can remove Vista and install XP. Some computer mfrs are including the XP disk with each Vista computer sold, others handle it differently.

could you give details, thanks.
what problem do you refer to?
actually i must say, vista works well, much faster than my XP. it sets up More and does it quicker.
new printer is also much better.
hey , i agree "its a pain ", but the whole market is going in this direction, not just PC. cloths, electronics etc.
i think the Market Overall should be under attack by citizens, not softy alone.
thats because "they didnt have rivers back then".

Not only was there a complete overhaul in SOFTWARE compatibility, but hardware was changed as well. Old ploy: completely change formats: 8-track, cassettes, CD's etc. so people have to buy everything OVER again.
And, per usual, they released before the major bugs are not worked out again.

Actually, MACs are way less backward compatible than Windows versions. You can still do some DOS on Vista.
Not that I am defending MS - my Vista is sitting here practically brand new because I don't like it. I continue to use Win98. I find that I can do things quicker on my old, slow Win98 than I can on my 3GHtz Vista.
Even playing Freecell is quicker/better than the Vista version.:)

Dell and Asus are now doing laptops with Ubunu Linux preinstalled. Saving is $140 per machine. Software (free) is as good as if not better than Windows offerings. Security risk is minimal. Linux and Open Source has improved faster than MS and take up is strong in UK for private individuals and companies.
Competition can only help consumers get a better deal.

Vista was a big seller, but XBox is a gem for them
All 5 of their business units showed strong sales gains
