View Full Version : What software is the most popular?

Doing a search, I didn't see an answer to this in any single thread. So, what is your favorite software that you depend on the most? Still using DOS? Custom spreadsheets? Software you programed yourself? Still entering data manually or only downloaded data? Purchased software?

This question is similar to asking a Craftsman which saw is the most popular?

The obvious return question would be, What do you want to use it for?

The people who say they "just" want to win money at this game are usually the ones who want to put the least amount of time in to make it.

This great game of ours is infinite in possibilites for strategy and anyone utilizing any strategy can win any single race.

Over time you need to not only have a sound strategy but also solid data with factors not shared by the general public.

I tend to prefer HDW programs, since the people supplying that data do the best job as far as accuracy and customer service. I cannot imagine taking over 30 minutes to input pacelines for 9 races like I use to, so I am glad to download the data and pay a fee.

Many other programs using BRIS, TSN, or DRF data probably do just as good a job. But even the slightest drop in accuracy is costly in this game, so that is what I stick with HDW.

Oddly enough, this has been discussed before. Here are some links that will really clear things up...

Oddly enough,

Darn! You search a lot better than I do!

Those links proved to be of historical interest but it would be good to know what is being used now. njcurveball started us off in the right direction, I'd still be interested in the most popular software in usage currently.

Whatever. I did not see one single program mentioned in njcurveball's post, did you? Perhaps you should start your own poll.

There has been no major handicapping programs that would need to be added to the list that I'm aware of. And if somehow I missed a new one it would likely only have a few users from here, so a poll would reflect pretty much the same numbers I would think.

Of course, I haven't seen a standardbred software poll but that's understandable. There aren't too many programs written for the buggies, and this is predominantly a t-bred board.

Guess I need some new glasses. Scrutinize as I might, I still fail to see the name of one single solitary handicapping program. Do you, buddy?

HDW stands for Handicappers Data Warehouse. One of the questions in the original post was

Still entering data manually or only downloaded data?

I know that many here think they have the one and only "correct" answer, but I choose to offer more information than orders on what you SHOULD do.

Would you at least agree that having accurate data is MORE important than having the most popular program? I would hope so.

My personal choice of the programs listed on HDW

http://www.horsedata.com/

Would be HTR, since Ken Massa is not only a comptetitive tournament player, but also provides a great service with his program.

But I have also used HSH with success and found Dave Schwartz to be very smart, cutting edge, and someone who provides tremendous customer service.

I would also recommend Synergism, as Bob Purdy has been doing a fantastic job since the early Sartin days.

I hope this helps you my new bff!

Back on topic...I use HTR and CJ's program most of the time - others, MPH, Validator. BRIS data for all but HTR. I see no problems with it. CJ's figs are about as good as they get.

Just curious how you're using BRIS data with Validator. With the exception of the manual entry version that came with the original program, they all use Trackmaster data

Without a doubt, EBS is unquestionably the best software program in existence.

That's just your opinion, not a fact! By the way, what is EBS short for?

EBS or Eye Ball Scan was a catch phrase used by the Sartin group

"Eye ball scan"

Duh! ...Thanks Richie.

Spilparc had me stumped on that one until you revealed the code.

Yes and was raised to another level by Jim "The Hat" Bradshaw who hit 3 pick 6's at Remington Park within 15 days betting tickets costing $4.00,$8.00 and $4.00. Bought the custom Caddy he still is driving with the loot.

Signs under the grandstand at RP read - "Hat is God"

Cutesy. I hate cutesy. Eyeball scan won't crunch the numbers, but is good for ctrs.
