Thanks Richie,

Great way to start the day, that was the man. I’ve owned that instructional in about every format known to man! :)

A little background on that video;

As well as he played on that clip, that was near the end for Jaco and he basically went into detox to get sober enough just to cut it. 5 years before that he was playing the greatest fretless electric bass in the world imo.

Also, that was a fretted Fender precision neck (much thicker and far more difficult to play fast licks) on that bass, because his classic jazz neck (narrow and fretless) was basically shot. The 6+ fret stretches he makes on this size neck are just remarkable.

Short story: A short time before or after that taping (it’s been a while) friends of ours actually picked up Jaco on the Jersey side of the tunnel sometime after midnight. He had no bass, just a backpack and looked like he hadn’t slept or showered in days. They took him back to their place and he basically collapsed in a spare room. When they woke up he had stolen a few items and whatever cash he could find and he was gone. It wasn’t long after that he was killed in Miami, although his drug abuse probably would have done the same sooner or later.

Pure genius who’s IQ tested off the scale and changed the way most players looked at the instrument.

Thanks again Richie!

The one…the only…

Geez Chick…You have me really embarrassed now. After going to a GREAT USF :jump: game last night you wouldn’t think I’d be so morbid. That had a real Gomez Adam’s ring to it.

It's a really interesting story, I'm glad you told it, so don't be embarrassed....but it did bum me out!

I used to watch Jaco playing basketball in the Village with the tough dudes, people used to come and watch. I saw him play at some jazz club in the Village, can't remember name. He was awesome, that was back in the 80s. My boyfriend at the time played double and electric bass and just worshipped him. We were shocked to find out about his death.

Bill Evans was something too, died of a bleeding stomach ulcer, saw him at one of the Cambridge clubs. Saw Stan Getz at Lush life club. Keith Jarrett at Village Vanguard. Pat Metheny at an old club in Boston called "1369." All those clubs are gone now, my ex says they dissappeared after 911.

Well if I hadn't met Wayne then I wouldn't have seen any of it I guess. Would have just led my usual hermit life that I continue to lead now. Thank goodness I got into horses and racing.

Chick don’t read this 1st part…;)

The sad irony in that is he was dribbling a basketball on the dance floor in the club when the bouncer beat him to death.:(

OK Chick…this part isn’t depressing! (I hope) :D

Jognlope; we probably sat next to each other during that period in the 80’s. My friends and I used to take turns calling each other when we heard Jaco had a gig in the city. "Worshiped" was the right word among bass players.

Forget the mistake near the end when Jaco thought the tune was continuing…This is early in his time with the legendary super-group Weather Report. (1977 on The Midnight Special) If you played fretless electric bass you learned this tune. One of my teachers used it as an assignment and it remains one of the classic bass lines ever written or performed in the opinion of many.

Enjoy Jaco at age 26 playing “Teen Town”…

One year later in Germany here’s their most famous tune “Birdland”. Amazing the depth of their sound for a 4 piece band and this is 30 years ago. (Note: It’s certainly a RIP clip…Legendary Joe Zawinul on keys, Wayne Shorter on horn and of course some bass player who is no onger with us.)

PS: Thanks for the indulgence Richie! I know the odds are long we have bass players on a racing site, but given the chance to talk music I can’t resist!

Did you ever hit Bradley's or Knickerbockers on University in the Village? One New Year's Eve I started at K's for the first part of Auld Lang Syne and then to Bradley's for the end of it, not on purpose, just happened that way.

Here's Wayne, catch him at Crab Cafe, I think that's the name, for a good meal and good base quarter if you're ever in NYC:

I can’t recall many of the club names to be honest. Remember, I was a musician in my “formative years”! :D

Seventh Avenue South jazz club
55 Grand Club
Those are two that come to mind. Thanks for the link; I’ll have to check it out later. Racing reality calls…its time for work! :)

I have a cloudy memory of hearing Jaco was wandering around the Village in bad shape and wanting to go find him ... but alas I made no attempt to do such. He didn't know me from Adam. If I ever buy a claimer I'll name it Jaco something, Teentown. I have this semiplan to buy a claimer in my elderly years. I'll probably buy a clunker ...:(

I used top play Jazz Bass and Peavey T-40 (fretted basses) and can confirm 6+ frets is a long way to stretch!!

Wow, fellow's heart went on three hours after the plug was pulled, but then at 35 I guess there is a lot of cardiac reserve even in a drug ravaged body.

All right Ken!

I am shocked how many musicians check this sight. This is just posters; I can imagine many more that “lurk” as well.

Yes, that stretch he does on that wide neck requires serious wingspan and a real strong pinky to say the least. Not to mention he could do it on the ‘E string which with any speed is just sick!

As much knowledge as he had of the fret board and incredible ear his picking technique always blew me away. I completely changed the way I picked after hearing his 1st solo record as thousands of others did.

Peavey T-40…A classic!

46, the guy was a freak in every way.

My favorite guitarist is Steve Morse and he and Jaco came out of the famous UO Miami music school. He told a story of jamming with Jaco. He went over his place ready to play and Jaco says…”Let’s go to the beach” About 4 hours later after swimming, jogging etc…they came back and Steve said he was wiped out.

He went on to say, Jaco had such pent up energy that he needed to do that just to calm down enough to play. I’m certainly no medical expert, but it sounds like the type of condition where medicine could have player a role…and not the type he wound up on. :(

Belmont time…Music will have to wait unfortunately for a while.

I mostly jammed with some friends who hardly practiced so I we mostly ran 3-chord progressions and I mostly learned scales and faked everything! The other guys always told me "Play less notes"!!
