We have talked to death such topics as pace figures, speed ratings, variants, yadda yadda yadda.
But it all for naught if the horse isn't ready to run today.
How do you decide if a horse is fit and ready or just entered?
What pacelines do you use? His last, his best, average a couple?
What do you look for in the PP's to see if you can expect improvement or decline? Did Doc Sartin have a good idea when he handled it by just using the best of last three, similar distance and surface? Seems that the more lines you go back on a hrose, the better odds you should get. But how far, what do you use for excuses?
Inquiring minds want to know.

I prefer horses that are fresh (2nd-4th) start off a layoff. I mainly rely on the last line unless it can be excused for whatever reason.
Then I go 2 races back. I reluctantly use lines beyond that.

Things that signal pending improvement for me:

1) new pace top at second call
2) within 2 lengths at 1st 2 calls then fading in the stretch.
better if racing 2 or 3 wide
3) Improved Turn Time
4) Improved Final Fraction

These are just some of the things I look for.

Did I turn U off already??

Well, for U're sake I better not have, now read this baby:

1) Most powerful trainer intent: Recent claims, even as far back as 5 races. Trainers don't like to be embarrassed. Some people don't like droppers but with recent claims, there is severe danger. Do the math: Purse + claiming tag = original claiming price; it makes sense. Oh yah, don't forget about the wager.

2) Any equip't change.

3) Any medic'n: Luv Lasix.

4) Sharp work, long work, or presence of a work in the long absence of works.

5) Horse shows much improved early speed unexpectedly but tires a bit late. He will have more air in him his next start.

6) The horse with the best adjd Beyer.

7) Trainers do believe that horses have a best distance-do not ignore this.

8) Weight breaks-I luv bugs and eat them too. Trainers can get a little weight break by entering them for 5k less in a 50-45 claimer.

Happy New Year Tom.
