On this date in 1920, carrying the top weight of his career, 138 pounds, three-year-old Man o' War won the Potomac Handicap, conceding 24 pounds to his nearest rival, Paul Jones, and 30 pounds to the second-place finisher, Wildair.

On this date in 1943 the U.S. Army occupied the grounds of Hollywood Park as part of the war effort.

On this date in 1994 Pine Chip, driven by John Campbell, set the world record for trotting on a half-mile track by winning in 1:54 at Delaware, Ohio.

On this date in 1999 jockey David Gall retired as the fourth winningest rider of all time with 7,396 victories to his credit.

You might know I heard that the year Man Of War ran they ran the Preakness on the same day as the Kentuckey Derby becuase they two tracks were having a fight. The Preakness folks were able to convince Sam Riddle to run Man of War in their race. So Man of War never could have won the Derby nor the trible crown.
