View Full Version : Internet device query

Probably like a lot of different areas of the country, demographics and economics have taken a toll on classical music. In San Diego the choices pale compared to what we used to be able to listen to but that station ceased about ten years ago. Now, there's a Mexican based broadcaster that does classical but it is only snippets and popular, recognizable works. No obscure baroque or even Mahler. KUSC in LA gets a little too much interference for my tastes. And I refuse to listen to the local PBS radio affliate after they announced some recent changes.
The catalyst for this rant & query came just now when I was treated to a little tiny piece of Orff's "Carmina Burana" (and BTW there's a whole host of beautiful music he composed that hardly ever gets played). Now I wish they would have played an extended excerpt and I don't feel like breaking out my classical LPs at the moment (that's another story and project).
So, other than setting up a PC as a part of my stereo system in the entertainment unit, is there a device that would allow me to program URLs into it and feed the music stream into an auxilary input? If I had to I could use the TiVo but that's a relative hassle to use compared to a tuner or tuner like device.
What's out there guys?

Conditional on the distance between your sound system and your computer you can easily get a wireless device that will fire over a stream into aux, or in the case of snug proximity, wired.
I will STRONGLY recomend Rhapsody as you'll not find a more complete library and for $10/mo you can listen unlimimited, in vivid resound, any track from any piece you could imagine. I often have conversations with people around the world and as we talk music I am able to call up most and be listening to it within seconds. It's also a great way to A/B different interpretations of songs/pieces. Want to listen to the nuance of difference between Orff's Carmina Burana by the Chicago Symphony, The Philadelphia, or Berlin  (the best)? - Live it up! You want to hear 20 different versions of "I Get a Kick Out of You"? - Knock yourself out. If you have the ability to record what you hear, all the power to ya.
If you simply want offerings to be played for you, Shoutcast has a plethora of superb stations that you might find to your liking.

Here's some wireless stuff:

Shop around. I have no idea is this is the best or the worst stuff available. I use it to ship the output of my satellite receiver around the house. Fidelity is certainly good enough for that.

just make sure you don't have a wireless phone on the same frequency......or near it. Wireless phones pulse and you will hear it on your televisions

Good Caveat! - This is my only 24/7 wireless activity in the house (cell phone doesn't count). I normally don't use wireless networking but it will interfere if too close to a receiver and turned on.
